A point to note, scoot, is that courts martial for running aground were very rare during the pre-steam era & were usually dealt with as fairly minor infringements, mostly because the ships were much more at the mercy of the wind & currents than they were once they were self-powered.

Once the admirals got their heads around the new-fangled steam engines (ie: by rising up through the ranks having commanded such ships as less senior officers), & because of the greater expense of the steam ships, the running aground of a ship became a more serious matter & could lead to a court martial followed by terminal stagnation of the offending officer's career (even now it's rare for an officer to lose his/her commission &/or do any prison time for running aground).

Working from home as a government bureaucrat, due to COVID-19 = doing almost the same thing I do every day in the office, but with more internet accessibility, and less paperwork (which is a bad thing, since the field staff apparently didn't get the memo the Central Office is closed for the duration.)

And no spending money on gas or food and coffee at the food court at work.  That is one thing I do miss about working in the Spencer Gifts home office.  The coffee was free and the cafeteria subsidized.

I'm not saying it applies to you, but it strikes me that those with a habit (smoking, drinking, drugs, porn, model building) could indulge them while WFH with a much much lower chance of retribution from the employer.

I used to find working from home was suitable for some tasks, report writing and appraisals, that type of thing, but as the majority of my job was to manage people you tended to need to be in the office. Or at least you did 12 years or so ago when I retired.

Biggest change now would be the reduction in numbers I suppose ?

Back when I had a job where I could, when I WedFH I would start late, do as little as I thought I could get away with (I was usually writing minutes or OH&S documentation) and then spend the rest of the day either playing video games or making models.
The trick was to keep everything up and running so if someone rang I could answer their enquiry promptly.

I think sometimes people are surprised by how much quicker they can get their job done at home because there are no interruptions or at least none of the non work ones ? Once this is all over a lot of management will be looking at numbers and office space ?

I knew people who based 40 year career's on that concept.  They were in the office though. Type of person who always managed to be there just as the M.D. came out of the lift so they could open the door for them  Most senior managers knew what the situation was though, not all though.

In my case the enquiry was usually from the boss and was often along the lines of "I forgot tell you we have a new job.  You need to write a Work Method and a Job Safety Analysis for it".
"OK, I can do that.  How long do I have?  When do we start?"

Most of what I do can be done by email and phone.  The problem, though, is when a caseworker wants to know exactly why their travel claim is *lower* than what they submitted.  For that, I need the paper records which are up in Trenton.  Which I'll then talk to them on my one day in the office.
