JAAF Skyly J2V2

After a lot of lessons were learned during the first 6 years of the war, designers of the スカイリィ (Skyly) factory took a bold decision: instead of refining or upgrading an existing fighter plane they would blend together the best designed bits of the top-end fighters of that period, no matter what nationality,  to build the ultimate prop fighter.  The J2 was the result.  Pictured here is the J2V2 version, intended for use with the JNAF but also in service with the JAAF, which had added wing tip tanks to increase an already impressive combat radius.

Some games and movie titles often inspire when it comes to 'what-if' aircraft. The anime (and novel/game/manga) Sky Crawlers is certainly one of those. So, me being me, I flipped that around and used an actual design from the anime and turned it into a what-if, in this case I used Bandai's 1/72 Skyly J2 and gave it the Japanese Army Air Force treatment. You can tell how well designed this kit is (for those of you who build their Gundam kits this is no surprise) by the fact that during this build only two tiny drops of glue were used, and those were for the German fuel tanks that I added to the wing tips. Those tanks came from the spares box, as did all of the decals. Painting and decal placement is based on nothing but imaginative guesswork.
I will take some more photo's outside later, weather permitting. Thanks for watching :)

Interesting, yes some more photos would be good.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Just one picture taken outside, the rest inside because of the windy conditions.
While going over the photo's I noticed I forgot to paint two small things (the outer rims of the lower parts of the wheelwell covers) so I'll be touching those up later.  ;)

Bonus shot:

Thanks for watching

Interesting build. The b&w pic is particularly atmospheric. Looks like one of those of Japanese aircraft in my 1945 Observers Book of Aircraft. Mind you a lot of those were models as well
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Terrific, but we REALLY need to know about the Zwilling floatplane in the bonus shot!

It looks like it has a 3 blade prop on the port, manned fuselage and a twin 2-blade contra-prop on the starboard one! Very techie, and Tophe will go in to Whiffgasm over it.  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

That's an old build, Kit, it's somewhere on the forum.
edit: Tophe provided the link, I just noticed

BTW: which color/tone did you use for the Skyly's fuselage/wing? Is it a Gunze authentic tone, or something lese?

I used Vallejo Air 'Hemp'.

The Skyly certainly looks a brute: a sort of Fw-190D-on-steroids.

Lovely build - well done.
