While the OV10 float plane has been suggested, what about something a tad earlier, the OV1 Mohawk as a float plane?

Good idea.
To quote Wikipedia "As originally proposed, the OF-1 could be fitted with water skis that would allow the aircraft to land at sea and taxi to island beaches at 20 knots".
I've never been able to find any pictorial evidence of these water skis.

I made a naive one, some years ago, in yellow :

Most likely another iteration of 'panto-base' and similar:

Thanks JCF.  At last an answer to the "how do they take off from the beach?" question.  And quite an obvious one too.  You just get some speed up and drive into the water!

Lovely Mohawk Eric ! Looks pretty good like that.

The US Army used to play around with their Otters in a similar fashion, using the skis designed for snow slightly modified. I think. At least that's what it looks like to me

It must make for quite an anxious moment the first time you try a landing.

If you have ever seen an Otter or Twotter coming in to land STOL, I'd guess so ! You'd be thining "splash !" and "sink" ! lol

Must admit first time I landed in a floatplane, in Alaska, it was a slightly nervous experience. Take off was no problem but there was something odd in my mind about landing on water. Thing that surprised me, but shouldn't have, was how quickly she came to a stop

First time I flew in an amphibian (in WA) as we approached the lake we were heading for the pilot regaled us with the story of how one had flipped on landing recently because the pilot absent mindedly lowered the undercarriage to land on water.
On the way back, as we approached the airstrip a different pilot told us how one had needed new floats recently because the pilot had forgotten to lower the undercarriage.
I think they were both telling their standard "my job is risky" stories.  But neither were as good as the parachute instructor who told us about the bloke who landed through the rotor blades of a helicopter preparing to take off...

My trip was pure floatplane as was a later air taxi to a restaurant  ;D I've heard of the parachutist/helicopter accident happening here in the UK as well
