Hey Guys, while doing a Little Thinking, and Idea Hit me:What If the C-130 was UIsed as the Basis For a Helijet? Was the c-130 around when Thunderbirds was on the Air? i was thinking a C-130 as a Helijet might be a Cool Idea, What Say You? if Anyone wants to do a Profile, Be My Guest! Thanks For Looking. Dan

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

Didn't the USAF already try that? I seem to recall a disaster in Iran in 1980 or so.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

I think you are getting off track, the start of this thread was about converting the C-130 into a Helijet not a super short take off and landing aircraft as in the video. Someone on here combined a 1/72 C-130 fuselage with a set of 1/48 V-22 wings which would suit the thread far more accurately. I think there may have even been someone who put two sets of V-22 wings on a C-130 fuselage somewhere or it might have been a design idea a proposed aircraft.

That could work with a Heller or Airfix Lockheed Constellation!

Gondor,

since Cobra mentioned Thunderbirds in the context of the C-130 helijet idea, I assumed he meant something along the lines of this: http://www.tobor2.com/helijet/helijet.htm

That Thunderbirds Helijet build is pretty wild ! Love the pic with all the boxes, and the second one before painting.

That could work without wings and propellers. In fact, all it needs is a rotor blade

First flight of the C-130 was in 1954 so it had been around for over ten years by the time Thunderbirds aired in 1965, so yes, you could certainly do it.

My objection to most sci-fi helijet (as opposed to ducted fan) designs is that the lift engines look too small and high-velocity. You want something more akin to an airliner's high-bypass turbofans.

Agree, many overlook that, wrong type of thrust, need lots of air at a moderate velocity, not less air at very high velocities.  Ground erosion would be horrendous (capable of digging your own grave I believe the Harrier flight manual indicated)  :o

The ducted tilt rotors in Avatar were one of the better ones.
