Not the usual sort of video: Adam's hurt himself in the shop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaGnyaR2B7s

He makes some good points here, which is why I'm posting it. He's hugely experienced, he's very safety conscious, but he still managed to nearly lose a finger because he relaxed and got careless AFTER he'd finished the job and was cleaning up.

If he can do it, you can do it to.

Learn.

Not 'Tested', strictly speaking, but definitely 'friends and relations of' and has a little bit of Adam Savage in it, so...

Funny, sad, silly and dark all at the same time...

Well you can't avoid working on it, but NEVER take it for granted. I had it drummed into me by two engineering uncles from when I was old enough to toddle into their workshops that lathes and pillar drills are ****ing lethal.

Got my last-but-two job because my predecessor created a vacancy by getting the arm of his puffer jacket, with his arm inside it, dragged through a steel-cutting chop-saw. Unlike regular chop-saws, those things are geared: if they're not stopping for steel, they sure as hell aren't stopping for mere flesh. He had four layers of stitches, starting at the bone and ending at his skin... :o

Stuff that Adam knew but, being human, got a smidge careless about.

The classic one is that your brain tells you "I've switched it off now so it's safe, right?"

Nope.

You've still got 15lb of steel spinning at hundreds of RPM and it'll take anything up to 30 seconds to slow down and stop. It doesn't need electricity to break your bones, just momentum...

I have this vacuform machine - it works well; almost too well since it can be difficult to remove the original. I ddon't know if I would pick it up and swing the heating element aside - like Adam does - because it hets very hot.

The heated plastic can also deform/partially melt styrene masters if you're not careful. But for the price, it's an amazing little machine.
