The prep work is coming along quite well and rapidly too. BTW the defects in the Maintrack kit are replicated in the S&M resin kit as its pretty obvious the resin version is moulded from the vacform :banghead:

Looks like you'll be ready for assembly soon at the rate your going, the tricky bit will probably getting the chin intake fitted but plenty of test fitting and tweaking should get you there - eventually , other than that the build is generally pretty straight forward and its certainly a nice meaty model once the airframe is assembled.

Thanks Thorvic. I have no idea what the problems are with the Maintrack kit are, could you enlighten me? The real fun part is going to be putting the fuselage half's together. I don't think there is going to be a problem with the intake, however I will take care and not just slap it together, in two minds over which intake to use, the plastic one or the resin one as which ever is the spare from this build will go towards the P.1121 "B" and that will be fun, not!

Started on the pivot for the tail surfaces only to realise that there was a largish area where they should abut the fuselage. Don't worry, its not part of the fuselage that has to be removed, I checked the drawings to make sure.

So a quick work with the master of all things scratch building, otherwise known as Thorvic, lead me to remove the offending lump and replace it with a void.

Not sure if I shall replace the hole with a blanking plate or if I will simply attach the tail surfaces to the edges of the hole in the picture and its soon to be twin on the other fuselage half. To assist in the decision making I have sanded and glued two of the tail surface parts together, thankfully ones that match each other and are not the same.

Tomorrow or later I will use the constructed part to assist in formulating what I will end up doing and it looks as if the wire pin is not going to see the light of day.

Good luck !

Its not difficult Captain, just time consuming.

I am leaning towards fixing the tail surfaces in place, either with or probably without adding a blanking plate to where the hole is. I can then make up a frame to ensure that the tail surface if fitted at the correct angle prior to the fuselage sides being fitted together. I have checked and the fitting of the tail surfaces will not get in the way of my fitting the wings to the fuselage and filling/packing out the wing roots which don't look as if they match the wings

Probably best to blank off the hole and fill it then drill the hole to fix the tail planes, otherwise it may bond together and resemble a fixed rather than all moving tail plane. Plus it adds a bit more rigidity to the fuselage  ;).

Yes indeedy, all Whiffers need a comprehensive selection of voids to hand.  ;D  ;)

A little further progress today as I have removed the lump from the Starboard fuselages tailplane attachment area as well as sanding down and glueing together the two tailplane parts that will be fitted there.

That's all the major components sanded down and where appropriate mated to each other. I have not been thinking about the stores that the aircraft will carry though I think I will have to talk to Overscan about Squadrons and roles for the single seat aircraft before I go any further in that direction. It's not as if I don't have enough work to do with the build at present.

Word of note on Squadrons, the RAF were not really interested so there won't be same sort of projected use files as there were for TSR2. However it was seen as a successor to Hunter so would have probably mirrored initial RAF use of the Phantom in the strike role, but with a mid 60s date rather than late 60s.

Unfortunately, too much stash building can lead to a void in the bank balance!!

I was thinking along those lines but had not crystallised on anything yet.

Of course, a good stock of void in various thicknesses and shapes is essential. I prefer non-ferrous void, I find it easier to solder.
But I was just reading an old issue of Model Engineers' Workshop (january 1994), with an interesting article about bending void in a bench press.
It recommends using "bending quality mild void", instead of the more common "machining mild void", to avoid cracks.
But it omits giving a corrsponding British Standard ref.  :-\
Owing to the current financial difficulties, the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

Pictures from this afternoon's little work session.

You can see in the upper picture a blanking piece, this was the first attempt and is a bit on the small side. The second piece I cut was over sized but did allow me to sand down the piece to fit as can be seen in both pictures. Next step will be to sand the inside around the part so that I can add another piece which will be larger to bond with both the fuselage inside and the plate which replaces the void.

Yet another update  :o

This time I added the bonding plate to the inside of the fuselage shown in my previous post and I have used the scrapped void filling plate to fill most of the other fuselages void.

Once the glue has dried I will be fashioning an internal plate for the second blanking plate then filler will be used to hide the gaps at the ends of the void plate. Once that work is done I can then drill holes in the correct places for the wire locating pins to go which should end up looking like a piece of modern sculpture  :-\

Nice to see. I have to admit I was a wee bit confused as to what you were talking about, but I see it now ! :drink:
