The Big Gimper

Folks:

Here are some WIP photos of my Meteor F.22. I'm building it as part of a GB build at another forum.

The base kit is the Xtrakit F.8. Wings are from an AModel Yak-25K and the horizontal stabs are from a 1/144 B-47. Landing gear is TBD but they need to tall. Still debating tandem vs tricycle. Also finding smallish two engine wings is not easy. At least within my donor stash.

As you can see it is early days in the build but I have done all the sawing, chopping and sanding to get the basic fit. I know I need add the "realism" for such a radical change to the meek and mild Meteor.  Going from a very thick to a very thin wing is providing some challenges. Still need find places to add more fuel.

Now many of you provided very complimentary comments on the conservative F2H-5 (BTW thank you) but as you can see here I have gone off the deep end. Think of it as Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde. Or Jedi vs Sith (yes, my 14 year old has discovered Star Wars so I need watch all 6 Episodes twice).  You're so cute Ani.

Seriously sexy!

Looking good and she looks very Soviet'ish to me.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

It is the wing fences.

Comrade: you do not have any wing fences. Uncle Nikita likes wings fences. Don't come back here until after you have added some.

I might remove one to remove the heritage.

It's not only the wing fences - the whole Yak-25/27/28 wings and nacelles look so utterly Soviet.  :dalek:

But the combo with the Meteor looks incredibly well - I am so enthusiastic because I have an idea of similar shape (but with none of the ingredients here, it will be smaller) on the agenda, and this F.22 gives some new impulses.

Wonder about the landing gear and the low nacelles? Tandem layout with outriggers, or classic Meteor tricycle with low ground clearance (beware of FOD)?

Good question.

I have "room" to keep it a tricycle gear but it would eliminate the under fuselage tank.
If I go tandem, it eats up a big part of the fuselage. Less fuel and ammo.
Or I do tricycle with outriggers.

Hmmm, what about a swept fin, too? MiG-15/17 style? (just an idea after taking a long look at the WiP)

Really, seriously need to switch to 1/72 as the choice of plastic is so much greater. This is going to be good . Whatever happened to that 1/48 Yak they kept promising us ( Hippo? ).

Bill Waterton (Gloster's chief test pilot) always said that the engines for the Meteor were in the wrong place, and should have been placed closer to the fuselage.  Maybe on a swept wing version (which they did contemplate), they would have moved them inboard?

Nice idea!

Could you have Il-28/Vautour style (short) main gears in the engine pods and a very long nose wheel?
