Messerschmitt Bf 110M-2

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was originally designed as a twin engined fighter aircraft from an original 1934 concept. The 110 first flew in May 1936 and by August 1939, the Luftwaffe had around 160 110s available for the blitzkrieg war on Poland. The Bf 110 outclassed its Polish opposition but the German High Command knew that it did not have the speed, range or manoeuvrability that would be required should the Reich go to war against Britain and France. With much haste Willie Messerschmitt was burdened with upgrading the 110, initially as an escort fighter but later as an attack aircraft.

Engine technology at that time limited him to the Daimler-Benz 110bhp 601 engine but he needed 50% more power and the only way to do that was to add another engine. To speed up development Messerschmitt simply grafted the nose of a 109E-4 on to the 110. It flew surprisingly well. They saw no need to further over develop the concept but decided to use the nose for the proposed 109F in the production aircraft with the 109F nose on the Bf 110M as it to be known going into service a month before the 109F-1 took to the skies. The new 110M-1 had lost the original heavy armament of the 110C and D with two 7.92mm  MG17s mounted on the engine cowling and a 20mm MG FF 'MotorKanone' firing through the propeller hub. In addition the escort fighter version also had a Mauser MG 151 20mm canon fitted in each wing in gondolas. In keeping with the original the 110-M also kept the single MG17 at the rear of the cockpit for defensive fire.

In the Bf 110M-2 version the two wing cannons were removed and long range tanks attached and provision was made to allow the aircraft to carry two externally slung SC1200 general purpose bombs.

Hindenburg AEW. By Sandiego89.

1/520 scale

In April 1940 LZ 129 was fitted with a Freya early waring radar mounted to the belly of the ship. The array could be winched up to allow ground handling and entry to the hangars at Frankfurt. An additional fixed array was mounted on each horizontal stabilizer. She was given a four color night time dazzle camouflage.

LZ 129 was used on several key nights of the Battle of Britain to guide bombers and to provide warning of British fighters.
