How about a Canadian-built Whirlwind variant with US radials?

IIRC somebody in the UK had a licence to build the Hispano-Suiza V-12 engine. What if Petter had anticipated the problems with the Peregrines in the same way that Roy Chadwick foresaw problems with the Manchester's Vulture, and had an alternate scheme for a Hispano-Suiza -engined Whirlwind in reserve just in case?

Where to get the engine nacelles? Something French or Soviet? Klimov M-100 and Klimov M-105 were basically slightly tweaked Hispano-Suiza 12Ys.

Dewoitine D520.  A couple of Frogspawn examples should be fairly cheap.  You could even retain the cannons firing through the spinners...

There's also the simple but cheap and (externally) surprisingly good Hobby Boss kit.

Yep.  And apparently an RS models and a Hasegawa - if i'm reading Scalemates correctly and they are not the same moulds.

I have one by ARK which is frogspawn.

Hasegawa one is a nice, neat little kit. Goes together with no fuss. Got mine alog with a few others they produced at the time when the price was reasonable rather than plain daft.

RS one should be good as well going by their toolings of other types from around the same time

FROG 520, Airfix Super Mystere (both when I were a lad) and a Hobbyboss MS406 are tge only French subjects I've ever built. Did whif a SMER D520 though.

Perhaps tightly cowled, late version two-stage supercharged R-1535s? 

While never produced P & W did have some experimental R-1535 variants that were reaching the 1,000 hp mark
on test, and the 44" diameter would appeal to Petter.
