With an engine THAT big on the front a fixed gear would be irrelevant after it'd taken off, it would have been ripped off in the slipstream.  

Which is why you would protect them with spats...

They'd better be VERY low drag spats!

The profile of the 1st image represents the successful "Wasp Fokker". Not quite sure about the photos.



But that is the way VL did it. Who knows how someone else would've gone about it.

There's even a Special Hobby kit of the prototype in 1:72, AFAIK. But im provisation is more fun, and cheaper. 

Yes, special hobby built D.XXI.5 sarja and it's expensive in here. Same like you, I prefer Cheaper and fun

There are no wrong colours, just different contexts.

It looks very purposeful.

That looks cool and not D.XXI-ish at all. Reminds me of the XP-37 prototypes?

Very nice one, wonder if I can build a Merlin-powered one from the D.XXI kit I still have in store.

Ya I'd say the colours look fine ! And there are no wrong colours  Once the markings are on and a bit of weathering she'll be right at home.
