Re:  RAF confidence in penetration

I once spoke with a former Vulcan pilot whose crew had a specific target in Ukraine.  They were fairly confident about ingress as they would be running-in a few minutes behind SAC 'rolling-back' the front-line defences with the first wave, plus disruption to C3 systems with all the EMP and ICBMs going off deep in the USSR.

What they weren't confident about was getting home.  In fact they had no expectation of that; just find a long road to try to land.

Yup. A BBC documentary on the UK Deterrent and quoted by me before has an ex Vulcan pilot recounting how they were advised by their Wing Co. "to carry on East until you run out of fuel, bale out and settled down with a plump Mongolian lady"  :-\
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

On the Beach: the RAF, Neville Shute's shortest story.  ;D

That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.
