Has an air defence variant ever been discussed? The TSR 2 would be ideal for carrying a number of large, heavy, long-range missiles. A set of AIM-54 Phoenix, perhaps, or a British long range missile (Sky Dart) based on the Sea Dart SAM.

Why bother when you could have the Fairey Delta III?

Errrr fixing a decent radar dish in the TSR.2's nose would have forced a massive set of changes. Effectively a whole new front fusilage would have been needed.

And that small wing is'nt exaclty the ideal for high altitude manuvourability.

However this could be a case of confusion, OR346 aircraft studies (for a RN multirole aircraft and for RAF) included 'scaled' TSR.2 type designs (they did'nt meet the OR but then it did call for a near TSR.2 type performance but from a plane 30% smaller). Three specific types of design did meet those criteria and would have applicable for Canada. One was various Swing wing offerings form Vickers, second was neat design from Brough (formerly Blackburn) section of HSA using lots of 'blown' surfaces, and third was a 'twin fusilage' fixed wing design from Vickers (able to fit a full size radar dish in).

Then there was the Blackburn buccaneer variant offered to Canada.

And why do you need the FDIII when you can have the CF-105 Arrow, eh?

Because the FD III was a British design!!!! And a better looking plane in my opinion.

Nah, Arrow looks better.

You know why?  It's got maple leaves on the wings.

Hmmmmm, maple syrup....

Ahh but it does'nt do 75,000ft in 1.5 minutes on turbojet alone from brakes release. Arrow is not in the same league as the FDIII.

Yeah, but we'd just cruise around at 50,000, and wait for your little fuel-less FD.III to come coasting by.......hey, what goes up........

Well, you could try, but it'd be a bit difficult when you are dodging AAM's launched at you from way below ya!!

Way below, eh?

Launched by what?

Hunters?

:dum:

Nah, as Toad said, the Arrow will just fly along and wait.

And if the wait is too long, a RCAF tanker Concorde will come by and refuel the CF-105.

Personally I think the concept of the RAF taking a low level strike aircraft and converting it to a high altitude interceptor, despite it having an airframe & engines totally unsuitable for the job is somewhat unrealistic.
