Finally picked up Erik Simonsen's Complete History of U.S. Combat Aircraft Fly-Off Competitions.  Very interesting history.  I was at the USAF museum, where I could easily spend $1000 at their bookstore.

Strangely the bookstore at RAF Hendon is not that good. The IWM one is a little better.

Given my current WWI and French history "thing" I picked up : Breaking Point of the French Army: The Nivelle Offensive of 1917

Just picked up Flying Wings and Radical Things: Northrop Secret Aerospace Projects and Concepts 1939 - 1994 by Tony Chong.

A treasure trove of the weird and wonderful from Northrop's archives. Beautiful period colour artwork and well-presented drawings alongside an authoritative guide from N1 to N392.

I did pick that up the other day and put it back down again. Be very interested in your views as it's a concept I have some afinity for although I feel we are much more prisoners of out history. Oh why don't we learn from it ? That's why we teach it after all  :banghead:

Bought on Amazon;
The Admiralty and AEW
American Secret Projects, fighters and bombers of WW2.
Thumbed through The Admiralty and AEW- Royal Navy Airborne Early Warning Projects.48 pages on softback book.Designs, drawings and concept artwork, a few actual photos. I was surprised to find that Wetland had proposed an AEW version of the Sea King as early as 1967 and another in by Elliotts in 1971.
Whilst the Grumman E-2A Hawkeye was proposed in 1966 , which reappears throughout the book as many times as the Br1150 Atlantic was proposed to the Royal Air Force in various formats.The Buccaneer gets five pages with all sorts of pods, lumps and bumps. The S-2 Tracker was reinstated in 2007 along with the S-3 Viking both fitted with the Searchwater 2000 radar. Two separate Osprey designs.Even the Chinook was proposed but lost out to the Sea King.
Some of my Whiffs builds could be altered to encompass the proposals in this book.

American Secret Projects 1937-1945 Fighters, Bombers and Attack Aircraft. Tony Butter and Alan Griffith.
208 pages of sketches, artwork, line drawings and photos. A must have for the Whiffer.
If the 1930's had the materials to hand then flying wings and forward swept wings would be the norm not only on fighters but bombers too.If you thought canards was a modern design the Super Marauder Model 189 Design No4, penned in January 1941 would be of great interest to you.
Each of the major aircraft companies not only give you background information on the  winning design but the alternatives they came up with and the competiting teams.
From twin-booms twin-fins to rear engines, contra-rotating engines. Even flying boats get a mention, the sleek lines of the Boeing Sea Ranger pitty only one was ever built!
I'll never be able to look at a B-29 without thinking "got to Whiff that".
