The last point is a good one Weaver. I'm just thinking in war time, you'd already have tonnes of experience in attacking a ship, and also the knowledge of their defenses, so why not !

Cool idea. I wonder if they'll arm them up like the marineflieger ?

No need to arm then for the fleet threat-simulation role, but they might well carry jamming pods. Another possibility would be a training 'missile' with no motor, warhead or control fins but a working seeker so that the ESM operators on the ships get a realistic signal.

Any advice oh what type of missile might be appropriate for the early 70's in this scenario?

Maybe the RN adapted the German Kormoran? Alternatively, the AS.30 or AS.20 are appropriate. Things like Martel or Sea Eagle came much later, in the 80ies.
The AGM-62 glide bomb could be an option, too?

Gondor

Maybe the AGM-62 Walleye or the AGM-12 Bulldog?

I know it's in a book I have around here somewhere....

Yup, the Bullpup would make sense, too. Shabby missile, but was AFAIK procured by the RN for the Scimitars and Buccaneers.

Captain Canada

I know it's not the original plan, but I'd love to see it bombed up

True but maybe it could be playing with an early proto-Martel Test Vehicle?

Looking forward to seeing this finished!

Snowtrooper

Quick googling tells that the Martel test firing program ran from 1970 till 73, with the official in-service date with RAF being Oct 74 and RNAS Oct 75, so it would be perfectly suitable for this Whiff, considering it's a special unit anyway  ;)

Bullpup vs Martel - I wonder which one I have on hand?
