HMLS Devastation

Thought I'd give this a bash (boom-boom).  Ive got a churchill firefly that I had bought with the express intent of turning into a land ship after being inspired by a landship I saw on here but since cannot find!

I have no boaty bits so they will have to be scratch built or bodged from the bits box.

I was just having a flick through ship bucket and came upon HMS Thunderer, which was one of a pair of Devastation class.  They have a nice compact super structure (easy to bash?) and are similarly proportioned to the donor "hull".

So the intent is to build something akin to an HMLS Devastation, in the rather fetching, turn of the century Oxide Red below waterline (not sure where this will be on the churchill..., Black hull, white upperworks and sand funnels.

Where's my beer ?

Thanks, I hope it will look interesting too.

Found some perfect pipe for the turrets too. A bit of pvc pipe. Not sure how well it will play with glue, paint or other plastic parts though. Anyone got any ideas?

Not sure about that one. Test it I guess.

PVC is very difficult to get any kind of glue to stick to.  :banghead:

It's relatively flexible so epoxies just crack away from the surface and it doesn't 'melt' like styrene does with solvents.

Bum.  Might use it as a former to wrap some thin styrene around then.

In DIY stores you can buy PVC glue, else how could PVC pipes and joints stay watertight?
I don't know it that glue will stick PVC to polystyrene, sorry.
Owing to the current financial difficulties, the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

Maybe my land battleship below?  I built mine using a 1/700 scale USS Arizona and scratched up treads.  Inspired by a 1930's magazine cover.

Full thread with in progress build pictures here: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,37605.0/highlight,land+battleship.html

I offer for consideration that using a 1/700 scale battleship for your hull and turrets would match up quite well for a 1/35 scale Churchill, or perhaps 1/1200 scale ship/turrets if your tank is 1/72 scale.  You can pick up some 1/700 scale or 1/1200 scale ships quite cheap.  Hull shapes can be tough to scratch build if you have not done it before.   Other hulls may work such as tug boats, or even toy type hulls, but it is nice to have the turrets and barrels from a kit.

Hope that help.  Good luck, the DEVASTATION is a neat looking ship.

If I match the beam of the ship to the Churchill (1:72) the scale comes in at a bit less than 1:400. I've not really scratched much before so this will be a learning experience...

Progress! Kinda. First turret roughed out. Pvc seemed to play nicely enough. I think the turret is a bit too tall at the moment. I'll need to take it down a mm or two.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Red seems to be the theme for the old land battlehsips.    I did one a while back for the let it snow GB out of a Char Bis and a USS Alabama.

When it's that big why bother to camouflage it?

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Proditor, that's the one I remember! So this one is your fault :) not the false start though, that was all me...
