F-16 FSW

Okay, I'm really don't work this hard.  I finished the MiG weeks and weeks ago, and it's just coincidence that I have something else to post already.

This is my production F-16 FSW, which I just barely got the wings onto.  I did the wings the hard way--by trying to recycle the kit's wings.  Next time I'll just build them out of sheet styrene.  I think it would've saved me some time.  And it would've given me some flexibility on the wing profile and chord, etc. . .

The thing I'm most proud of, that probably won't show in any pictures, is the extensive work I did on the intake to make it look more realistic.  The kit (Academy) intake had this big ugly plate with square edges that just didn't cut it.  What took the most time was finding a good picture of the intake path, so I knew what to do with it.  I found the best pics at f-16.net.

This will fit into the same story as my ACTIVE II, as another cost-saving measure intended to bring increased capabilities to a proven aircraft, due to the expense of conducting an expensive, prolonged campaign a long way away from the U.S..

The wing profile is quite a bit different from the original F-16 FSW concept, but since this is a production aircraft, we can assume there were quite a few changes made to the aircraft throughout it's development.  Plus, I'm not done tweaking it.

By the way, you should've seen the face on the guy at the model shop when I told him what I was doing with the kit.  It was precious!

Stylish!

Keep them piccies coming :)

Very beautiful model   And congratulations for the hard work on the wings. :)
Seeing the tailpanes ready to me mounted aft, it seemed, I wondered: where there tailplanes aft or canard foreplanes on the FSW? I did not remember... :(  The answer seems to be: both  . Another hard work to do, poor Noxioux.. But the result may be very marvelous :) , too bad this model was not existing commercially, ready to build :(

IIRC Tophe, the F-16FSW had tailplanes, but it may also have canards. My brain hurts

Hey !!! Very nice .... reminds me on a very old project from AVPRO for the "Future carrier borne aircraft" (FCBA) programe!

Love it Love it Love it. Kinda partial to butchering up F16's myself and FSW make me giddy i think it's probably a throwback to being a kid and Thunderbird 2.
But being a total ignoramus, what is the advantage of forward swept wings?

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

Yes, I have found the famous picture: tailplanes only, while the black-and-white wind-tunnel model I have shown above was having canards too, and mention of triplane layout. All is clear now. And Evan will tell us why this is genius, not only beautiful... If memory surves, I have read that the torque on the wing was directed in a fragile dangerous direction on normal swept wing, without this drawback on forward swept wing. Our dear engineer will tell us...

Well, let me direct you to a good resource, here, rather than operate strictly off memory.  The F-16FSW was proposed as a straight-forward adaptation of the F-16 (most likely one of the original full-up prototypes, much like the F-16/J79 testbed).  Now, if you also applied the canards of the YF-16CCV, you would have an interesting-looking aircraft.  The "stretched-out-triplane" configuration of canard, wing, and horizontal tail should in theory give you excellent manueverability, but I'm not at all certain how well it would work in practice.

I like the last line that "swept forward wings are a novel solution to a problem no-one seems concerned with solving".
And very interesting to find out that the X-29 was an amalgam of an F5, F16 and F18, hmmmmmmmmmm anyone getting any ideas here?

First of all, Noxioux' model is cool, cool, cool.

Second, just curious, if FSW = "Forward Swept Wing," why does the illustration provided by Tophe show "SFW" on the tail?

What does that stand for?

Styrene in my blood and an impressive void in my cranium.

SFW = Super Fecken Wild!!!

Hmmm, F-16XL base with F-22/23 parts?

My oxford dictionary finds just: feckless = futile, infirm. :(
I pity the poor F-16 FSW, weak and handicapped... :(
Will Noxioux's model have a rolling chair as undercarriage? What-if... :dum:
Well, Oxford town is not in Nova Scotia, Canada, I know...
