1:160 Destroid Monster (Macross) +++ Another vintage build with new pics

New pics from an old kit - the huge(!)1:160 Destroid Monster from Macross, made by Arii.

I bought and built this kit about 30 years ago, found in a dark corner of a local RPG shop and it cost a relative fortune at that time. But it was the first and only 1:160 kit I have ever seen, until today. The smaller 1:200 kit pops up here and there, but not its bigger cousin.

Due to its size and bulkiness, the model is hard to portray. After some recent success with bigger background posters I gave the Monster a new try - and here's the result.

The kit was built OOB and just slightly weathered - it is one of the last "1st generation" kits I built in the very late Eighties. Since it is still in good shape I did not (want to) re-build it. But today, if I were to build it again, I'd change some things, e. g. better cannon barrels on the back (the parts did not fit at all, and the diameter of each cannon is rather oval than round...) and maybe an implanted cockpit with clear windows and some interiors. Some joints (esp. the arms) would need some tuning, too, it's all pretty wobbly and fit is mediocre.

But overall, it is not a bad kit - it is just simple and old. An impressive piece!

As an extra, experiments with forced perspective and mix of scales for depth: the VF-1S in the foreground is 1:100 scale, and also from the same era as the Monster:

The realisation that 1986 was 30 years ago has made me feel old.

This looks great Dizz. Any chance of a picture with something like a jar of paint or your hand so we can get some idea of it's actual size?

Here's a look at the set, with an added Humbrol and Tamiya tin/glass for reference. The Monster does not appear that large, but it occupies a lot of volume!

The 1/100 VF-1S looks to be about the same size as a 1/144 Gundam?
And while the monster isn't tall those long gun barrels certainly take up space.

Yes, they belong to the same "kit box class". The 1:60 Patlabor kits are also of similar size.
