I think The Gripper would have needed at least three engines to fly profitably in Rhodesia, maybe even four! 

When I flew in them back and forth to Berlin Templehof BA used to limit the passenger load on the London-bound flights with Trident 2s as there was a risk that they wouldn't get off with a full load on the short runway.

HS Trident and Dassault Mercure shared the same drawback: low range. So, why not external fuel tanks as a "quick and dirty" solution?

you know i have access to the last complete  Hawker Siddeley HS.121 Trident 1C aircraft, G-ARPO, which is open to the public and they have some of the drawings of several different takes of the basic trident including a figure 8 bubble decker and several with wing tanks and a belly tank, that are not the far away from what you have drawn

And the problem with power: instead of a 4th engine ... I understand that JATO in a civil environment wouldn't be acceptable, but how about small post burners to be used only during take off?

jato was a real option but the group have yet to find the photos of it fitted on a operational aircraft although they believe they have the brackets for the fittings for the stubs on their aircraft, some of the later aircraft actually have 5 engines the 3 mains 1 extra for takeoff and also the APU
