Yeah, you're right! They're really quite nice, I was pleasantly surprised. Should be a fun little relaxing build.     That Discus sounds glorious.      (just had a google image  break to look at that one... lovely craft.)

Hell, while we're on the subject...

Here's the box for the one I'm working on.. I'm not entirely sure it's the correct box for it. The instructions say "Actually in box: SZD.16 'Gil'" written in pencil and the picture is different for sure but anyway...   :


Not entirely relevant, but interesting to look at from a "box design and art" standpoint.

These are the other two I have; they are as advertised:


I think they're pretty neat. 

With that said..  the build comes to a halt as I don't actually HAVE any Testors acrylics. Whole point of this build is mainly for: to have fun (as always) but really, so I can see how much I like using Testors acrylics. I'll keep building on it but now that's there's no rush I'm not going to blitz through it.

Here it is, though, I have the fuselage halves glued together but the rest is just mocked up,  P-51 for reference:


It's molded in a lovely color! A shame to paint over it. 


The Viper is coming along, as well:



Much better but there are still some issues. I need to sleep on it (because right now I'm close to saying, "EHH, It's alright!!!" so I can start the painting that I'm looking forward to..)  but I'll probably want to go in for another round of PSR on the fuselage.

I've also PSRed the three fuel tanks and have them mounted upon toothpicks which are in turn clamped inside clothes pins, awaiting gloss black so I can finally make them NMF.

Working on the Viper again while the glue dries on the glider fuselage.

Painting the pylons and gear doors in the fuselage blue color.  Looking good! I have all that jive in my Helping Hands thingy drying up, so I collected all my yellow bits for a group picture.



ARTSY FARTSY! Yeah buddy. Pretty colors. 

I've also been slowly building up remaining areas on the fuselage that need addressing with a few layers of regular ol' acrylic paint. It takes awhile doing it this way but works still the same and sands really easy. Good thing I'm not in a hurry! No point in sleeping on it.. I know full well I'll wake up and decide to do it right so I just dove on it and started getting it done.

I'm going to check the glider now and see if the glue is dry enough to file and sand on without turning "gummy" and balling up and all that.  (WELL, MAYBE... I've kind of been itching to hop in my Pe-8 bomber in Warthunder and go bomb some airbases....      )

Answer: We don't! The "Viper" nickname is officially specific to the F-16V, all the rest are "Falcons"/"Fighting Falcons".

I didn't know that about the V model. I didn't even know there even was a V model!      One of my favorite planes but I know less than I actually know.. err.. if that makes sense.   

DFZ is the expert so I'll let him explain it better... but from what I've gathered the pilots started calling it that in part because the "flared" bit of the fuselage going back kind of looks like a venomous snake and then it sounds badass, too, so that played a part. 

"Fighting Falcon" is one of the coolest names to ever grace any US piece of equipment if you ask me! Most stuff get a single name like "Eagle" or "Tomcat" but the F-16 was so cool it got a first and a last name. 

EDIT: Oh yeah.....   working on the glider again as I lost my mojo in Warthunder game. The fuselage is all sanded nice. I then dry fitted and sanded/filed on the wing roots and wings pieces until I was happy and am now gluing that stuff together.

Answer: We don't! The "Viper" nickname is officially specific to the F-16V, all the rest are "Falcons"/"Fighting Falcons".

IIRC it's a reference to the original Battlestar Galactica programme; apparently a character on the show stated the Vipers they used were 'the finest fighting craft around' (or sumpin'), and the F-16 community liked that so much they appropriated the name for their birds.

"First and Last name" - that's funny, right there. 

Brad, I've recently had good results using Talcum Powder and paint as a Quick'n'Dirty filler - it's especially good for when you're just about finished and you notice something you forgot to fill earlier... don't ask how I know that... but it also works if the paint is e.g. 3X layers of Flouro Orange over 2X layers of Pink undercoat and you don't want to paint all those layers again!
And it can be (carefully) carved or scraped with a blade, with another coat of the final colour on top if you think it needs it.

We are beginning to see a lot more glider kits now, especially from Central and Eastern Europe. There's even a fair few in 1/144 scale. Which might make the wings more manageable, but not sure about the cockpits ?

I've read that although it wasn't an official designation, "Viper" was the name that pilots first gave it during flight testing, before it was officially named the Falcon, which was later changed to Fighting Falcon because Dassault Aviation had jut come out with the Falcon bizjet.
Some say "Viper" came from the Gallactica series space fighter, supposedly because it was the also the "electric jet". I've also heard on some documentary that it was because, head on, it looked like a viper.
Like other fighters, it has multiple nicknames, "Lawn dart" has also be been used for the F-16...

That "Rainbow Viper" is looking good, Brad...

I'll give that a whirl. I'll try with baking soda first since I already have some in a bag sitting here in my model supplies. Been meaning to try my hand at CA and baking powder as a filler too but always just grab my other stuff instead. I like this paint idea better for stuff like I'm doing now. The paint technique I'm using works but if I can save time then why not. Sometimes I have time to burn, sometimes I have a dollar waiting on a dime!!!!

Thanks!! I'm nearing the downhill slide on this one now.. won't be long until it's finished! Last Artsy Fartin' Falcon I build was over 20 years ago and in 1/48. I used the stickers on that one because being lazy was great fun.

Be careful you grab Baking POWDER, and not Baking SODA instead - this is a SG accelerator... 
and yeah, the SG+Talc works well too.

Roger that!! This is baking soda.. I just got carried away typing. There hasn't been a thing of baking soda in this house in decades...   it comes in the multi-purpose flour so no need to buy any.. but yeah I meant baking powder!   

For some odd reason I'm slightly paranoid about even having it. . ... .
