Those nacelle thingies on the TE of the Convair 990 were drag reduction add-ons, and were also used as fuel tanks too. IIRC they came in 2-3 different sizes at various times as Convair developed the aircraft.  :o

I was lucky enough to fly in a Spantax 990 from Birmingham to Majorca in the late 70s or early 80s.

That sounds slightly risque, but very 70's, given the name are you sure it wasn't Ibiza you were headed for ? ;)

Hehehehe, no, it was definitely Majorca. It was a spur of the moment holiday, at 10 am my GF and I discovered we both had a week off at the same time, and by 6 pm we were airborne!  ;D ;)

Oh yes, it was in October and we landed at Las Palmas in a SNOWSTORM! It didn't last long though.

Sky Trek flew unique aircraft.  That had no seatbelts and the overheads were rigged to emit showers of sparks when they hit turbulence.

And the ground crew wore red shirts?

Were the shirts on the flight crew torn?

Any fuselage might work just turn it backwards and upside down so it looks less like an airliner. I might have to look into this!

That's the one!

What a glorious looking aeroplane, and with those weird aft-fan GE engines as well. And they even kept the crazy shaped doors from the 880 too!  :o

Quite glorious.... that livery suits the aircraft well. It reminds me of the old USAF MATS livery, even the yellow band.

Them doors remind of stuff I seen on old Star Trek TOS on alien planets. Kind of trapezoidal sort of like a casket. Tigther fit to human body shape. They're the coolest airliner doors I've seen. These have the best doors, Caravelles have the best windows.

I wonder if it's possible to find 1/144 Spantax decal sheet.......

EDIT:  Sure enough! Found a sheet and already ordered it.

Thing says they only made 50 sheets and the seller said they only had one left so I figure I better get it now.

Well done on the decals, TwoSix do good stuff too.

Who did you say did the 990 kit? I didn't know it had been kitted before this thread, I wish I had done.  :banghead:

F-RSIN does them.

Thanks Brad, that'd cost a pretty penny, but I may get one, just for old time's sake. I'll have to print my own Spantax decals for it, as you'll have bought the last set by then.  ;D

Roger that.

I have both the Convair kits sitting right here by my desk and I keep glancing at them and every time I do I convince myself a little more that I might want to build one soon.  Now that I bought the the transfers.... who knows, we may see a Spantax 990 sooner than later.

I think F-RSIN are usually at Telford Kit. Which isn't that far away
