Watched that BBC documentary on him again the other day, brilliant stuff. The best bit about the film of that carrier landing is how many people come out of the woodwork to crowd around the Vampire after he's landed it  ;D

Yes, the Vampire did have a hook, and used it too.

What I don't understand is how the Fireball landing never seems to be documented. I never heard of it until Logan mentioned it.  :banghead:
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

My guesses are either because it was a mixed-power aircraft or because it was technically an in-flight emergency.

You're not alone. The Smithsonian got it wrong when I was there a few years ago, too. It attributed the honor to the Phantom.

Eric Brown's landing was the first INTENTIONAL carrier jet landing anyway.  ;D ;)

I noticed that about the Smithsonian favouring the Phantom too, and I told them about Eric Brown as a result. That was in the mid 80s!  :banghead:

Went and did my readin. Pretty interesting stuff, indeed. Yes, seems akin, "Concorde was the first super sonic airliner."  "No, the DC-8 was!" "Well, the DC-8 didn't mean to be and wasn't really trying for it..."   All comes down to nuance. Could even be argued that the Tu-144 was first, not Concorde, as well. Similar, when asking in general what the first US military jet, in general was, the answer is P-80 half the time and p-59 half the time. Hell, history can't even agree on what the first flight of an airplane, period, was. General consensus was the Wright brothers but I've heard tell of some British gent(s) getting it done some months prior and even that over a period of a couple years that there were many first flights and that a lot of independent development had occured to sort of blur the lines a bit. History is fickle thing sometimes.

Absolutely Rick. I'd always enjoyed history, but once I learnt that it opened my eyes to a whole new world really and I've probably enjoyed reading about it even more.

In fairness though a lot of modern historians are far less chauvinistic then their predecessors  :thumbsup:

In some ways, yes I agree, but there are also more folk with axes to grind these days and they're able to reach a lot more converts.

Ha! I don't give a damn! It's fun. I read the thingy on Pearse. Very good stuff there... while he readily admits that he didn't make any true efforts until 1904 for that sweet, sweet prize money, his aircraft contained so many elements that were ahead of their time.  Ailerons versus wing warping, for instance. Dude was a genius.

Yup, we've had a few - probably more than our share, but that's the Per Capita Numbers Game working in our favour.  ;D
And the fact that given our location, we've had to just get on and get things done somehow for ourselves.

FH-1.

I've become exceedingly lazy this past week. Work, man, I swear!!! All my energy and gusto is spent on that stuff so when I get home I feel like bowl of pudding.  ;D  4-5 hours of solid, concentrated effort would have seen this finished days ago. Buuuut....  best laid plans, etc.

GOOD news is, I feel quite alright about it. Nothing has really gone wrong and while slow, each time I work on it, I'm that much closer to the end. The slowest of progress is ALWAYS better than messing something up and LOSING time.



I started painting by cutting in around things so that's why it's darker in some areas. Also, I finished off the fin/rudder area so I can use it to hold the thing and clamp it while the rest dries or whatever. I'll need one more coat going against the grain and perhaps one after that to make sure the coverage is good then go back in to re-touch the areas like the exhausts I intruded upon with blue paint.

Zero effort applied to any other builds.
