There is a school of thought which argues a claymore fitted in every car's steering wheel would have a positive effect on road safety.
I'd certainly pay more attention...

;)

Ha!! I could see that being the case. There were times I found myself being extra cautious because of it.

Here's what it was....  the recall was about the driver airbag. Were it to deploy, there stood a very fair chance that the entire mechanism would explode and send metal shrapnel toward the driver at neck and face level. Lord almighty? That's scary. I've been driving it and even after I learned of this I've been driving it for a couple of months.

Flippin Adda. Glad you never got in a position where it needed to be deployed

No kidding! I'm going to look into it but I'm certain there were deaths based on how adamant Ford was in sending me these recall letters. One I got a couple weeks ago had a mirror type thing in it and basically was like, "LOOK HERE'S THE DEAD PERSON IF YOU DON'T FIX THIS." I think I tossed it already but I'll take a pic if I find it.

That sounds likely be linked to the Takata airbags recall, across most manufacturers (Asian, European, American & Australian) & models built during a certain time period, over the last few years here in Aus, don't know about the rest of the world but it was a big deal here.

I remember hearing about that. Not sure if the same or not? This thing is kind of old, honestly. 2008 model so the airbag would have went in in 2007.

TheChronicOne

Yup!!! You nailed it... Takata airbags.

"Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate the bags. But it can deteriorate due to high temperatures and humidity and explode too forcefully, spewing metal fragments. The deaths and recalls forced Takata into bankruptcy with its assets purchased by a company owned by a Chinese investment firm."

We're nothing BUT high temps and humidity for months on end around here. Dodged a bullet!

As of March 29, 2019 this reports the death toll to be 24. Takata airbags should be a part of the definition of "irony" as a prime example. I just wonder if this is something that they could/should have foreseen or if it was unkown at the time that ammonium nitrate didn't have much of a "shelf life."

Some of the cars here that had airbags replaced early in the process had to have the replacements replaced because they too were faulty.

Apparently some cars which haven't had the bags replaced are now being de-registered.

GOOD.  Get them death traps outta here. I can't fathom why no one has them repaired? They go to great lentghs to contact owners about the recalls. I'm trying to fathom why the previous owner of MINE didn't get it taken care of. It was a one owner before I got it so it's not like people were playing hot potato with it and the recall repair is FREE and only takes about an hour to do. I mean... the only reason I wait the couple of months I did was to open up time in the schedule then of course you make an appointment then wait another two weeks but this dude owned it from when it was new to when I bought it so just what in the hell is the excuse? Further more I'm slightly pissy that no one disclosed the claymore on the steering wheel to me when I bought it. Dude who owned it had someone else sell it for him on commission and between the two of them at least ONE of them knew but never htought prudent to warn either the middle man selling it or me, the person who eventually bought it.

Same reason people don't wear their seat belts or drive too fast or drive drunk or use their phone while driving or drive when tired.  Because "it'll never happen to me, i'm a good driver".

Fred.... man... I don't understand those folks. The whole time I was driving around with it I was.... pretty damn scared. I don't like to push my luck with anything because bad luck has a way of happening without any help; why exacerbate it?!

Might try my F-86 tonight.

I despair.

You and me both.  :banghead:

Having spent some time crash testing cars in the 60s, seeing how much damage just ORDINARY chunks of car can do to (dummy...) bodies is bad enough.

Testing an Austin-Healey 3000 resulted in the poor driver being literally impaled on the steering column. It was not a pretty sight, even though he was a  dummy!

May as well do a quick update. Check this out... that lawn mower I brought back to the store for warranty repair work? I finally decided to check on it yesterday after it had been there for 6 weeks and 1 day. These idiots had no clue what I was talking about. It took 30 minutes just to ascertain that......... not a damn thing has been done; no one has even looked at it as far as anyone knows and in fact no one knows ANYTHING about it. These incompetent morons are useless. I was pretty heated and was talking mad sh!t. They even lost my phone number that I've already given them twice. I said, "DAMN Y'ALL CAN'T KEEP TRACK OF DAMN THING, HUH?"   Then this idiot goes and tinkers with it a little bit and gets it to start and declares there's nothing wrong with it. I said, I wouldn't have dragged it up here and let it sit around for weeks if there was nothing wrong with it. Dipshits all like, "Oh I been working on these types of things for 15 years. " I said, "Listen here, bud, you say you been doing it for 15 years? I been at it 20 or 25."  There were plenty of other things said, too, but I let them clowns know exactly how I was feeling about their incompetence.

Not only that.. I've tried to hire people to help me out around here with a few odds and ends. I need my shed torn down and hauled off and ol boy was supposed to show up tuesday or wednesday at the latest. I wasted my entire monday last week busting my arse moving all the stuff out of it and getting things ready for them. NOTHING.   Then I made an arrangement for someone to pull some weeds for about an hour in exchange for a $130 bicycle. Nothing. Then I made arrangements to get one of my supposed friends (oh, ol boy on the shed deal was/is a friend, too) to help me out picking up a little trash and without no word or call or anything stiffed me.   So.... this is all week long people letting me down and screwing me over. Sick of it.

Might try the F-86 this evening.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

We bought our Element from a dealer, and they said "it needs the recall done."  I asked why they hadn't just done it, and they shrugged their shoulders.  Called Honda, and they were floored- "I think it's illegal for them to sell it like that.  Bring it in right away."  Luckily, I work at Honda, so I just dropped it at the service center at our plant.  They gave me a natural gas Civic as a loaner.  Had enough gas in it; I was a little worried about refilling...

Yup. My time is coming! It might be awhile but I'll eventually pull ahead of all this mess and gain some ground.
