- MiG-21 Bis (MG-124) outside

(and an Antonov An-2 at the gas station next door)

Utti was one of Finnish main bases during WWII, and has a lot of other aviation history, too, so there is a variety of related memorials etc. in the area. Now Finnish special forces are trained there, so there are some restrictions but access to the display is OK.

Beautiful Finnish finds, thanks!  I will add them today.

The map now has more than 1200 sites: 925 museums, 256 gate guards, 48 other aviation sites such as memorials, factory tours, etc.

What are your thoughts on air crash memorials?

There's a hillside in South Wales with the remains of a Wellington bomber that crashed in 1942.

And another one I've seen. RAF Charterhall in Scotland was home to Richard Hillary who wrote The Last Enemy.

Some Drakens in Finland...

- Saab 35FS Draken (DK-237) near the canteen of the Satakunta Wing in Pirkkala. You need to walk past the gate to get close enough. Foreigners might want to be careful about entering.

Nick: I have some memorials on there, and air crash memorials seem pertinent, at least for the "other aviation sites" part of the list.  Maybe someday I can set up a map layer just for crashes.  For now, you might be interested in the Aviation Wrecks and Relics page on Facebook:

Perttime: thanks for all the hints.  And special thanks for all the location info- makes things so much easier for me!  I'm glad to see Finland is working so hard to preserve planes, enclosing them when they can.

There is a Westland WS-51 Dragonfly HR.5 WG751 on display at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham. I have memories of seeing this 15 years ago and it is an odd looking bird!

Just to the left of the Royal Engineers Museum on the River Medway. Visible between HMS Gannet and HMS Ocelot!

Cannot spot it on Google Earth - which is no evidence. For all I know it is still there. There's photos of it in other parts of the Chatham Historic Dockyard, so perhaps it has been moved around as necessary?

That's odd! It is visible using the GE view in the Museum mapping but as you point out, not on current GE.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Dragonfly gets moved around the site a bit.

reddfoxx

I'll check all these out tomorrow and add what I can find.  There are often issues with Google Earth, especially finding something as small as a Dragonfly (and if it's in any kind of camo.)

reddfoxx

I see the Dragonfly, found it by its shadow.  Thanks for that and all the detailed information over the past few days.
