I had always thought it was called hemp as well. Interesting thread guys, lots of good info and cool pics too !

Don't get them mixed up, the upper, sand colour IS called Hemp. It's lower grey colour that's Barley grey.

Should be Light Aircraft Grey for the undersides AFAIK

May I say clearly, right now, that I had an Old-Timers moment & wrote the wrong word - the tan colour is called HEMP, the grey colour is BARLEY GREY, & BARLEY is the name of the inventor not the grain ... OK!? :banghead:

I had  charitably assumed that it was an understandable lacuna, as your mind is no doubt seething with  so many wonderfully Whiffable concepts that are much more interesting.........

Well ... Yes ... Obviously ... That too. ;D

However, I, also, had this vague - but increasing & fermenting - suspicion that I had caused a certain level of confusion which seemed to be growing, rather than abating ...

... Either that or I'd initiated some bizarre self-perpetuating humour cycle that had my gaff at the centre of it. :-\

Its not Barley Grey, Barley Grey is what is now know as Camouflage Grey and was used on the upper surfaces of RAF Phantoms and 809 sqdn Sea Harriers in 82.

Nimrods were Hemp over Light Aircraft Grey, the same lower surface grey as their earlier White over Light Grey scheme.
