Personally I much more enjoy a little bit of a tighter theme, thus I am not a big fan of hypothetical pact states, or even client states so much- surely the big red star gives plenty of options for land, air, sea, space without having to create a whopper of a back story....but of course just my opinion

I'd go with that.  Keep to real world states but whif scenarious.

Anyone for a Tu-4 Bull serving in the RAF instead of the Washington B.1?

How could you tell the difference?  ;D ;)

Depends on how well you know your subject. The usual way is that the guns on the Tu-4 are 20mm rather than the 0.5" on the B-29/Washington. There are also differences around the Exhaust/Turbo areas too but that's getting into expert level rivet counter area

So ......

To test the boundaries so to speak.... If I was to do a Mid Life Update to my Hawker Siddeley/Tupolev Chancellor (M)R.Mk.1

as operated by the 'non-aligned' United Kingdom would that be acceptable under Rule 2?

It's not a big deal if it's not acceptable, but if it is okay it'll be a great excuse to tackle my next 'RAF' Bear  ;D

thanks

Change from 'non-aligned' United Kingdom to British People's Republic ;D

Maybe you do not accept Po-9 http://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php/topic,30040.0.html but what about Po-11?

I second Dave.  Red stars only is the way to go IMO.
As IMO seems "in my opinion", I wonder: what is the opinion of moderators? are (military) red stars obligatory? if this is the rule, I will not participate as I dislike armies. My project would be civilian prototype drawings of Belyayev & KhAI Mustangs (DB-LK-like and KhAI-3-like). Will I do it here?

Okay I'm going to answer this one straight away without consulting the other mods because I think it's crystal clear from the rules:

Quote2)  You can enter any kit/figure/story in this GB which relates to the former Soviet Union of the Socialist Republics or their allies in any historical or fictional setting you so choose. You can also use your fertile imaginations to dream up any other Soviet style state, empire etc you so wish as long as your creations follow the true path to workers liberation  ;D

'Relates to' does not, in any way, mean or imply 'belonging to the armed forces of', so no, it doesn't have to have red stars, i.e. belong to the armed forces of the Soviet Union, and that means that yes, it can be an Aeroflot/Cubana/whatever airliner.

The mods have conferred and yes, this is acceptable. The key thing is that the aircraft was supplied from the Soviet Union, so whatever the political status of the operator, it would be acceptable.

Hmm?
Could I, build one of my Russian/ex Soviet vehicles or aircraft that was a prototype   in real world but in my alternative world be a production aircraft snapped up by a group of very naughty boys and girls and pressed into service in a certain South American country?
Cheers,
Chris

As long as in the what-if world, the production version is a product of the Soviet Union or one of it's allies/clients, then this is okay. If it was an original design by a South American country, then it wouldn't be okay.

So... if I understand this right, I can go ahead and build my Yak-38 and it doesn't matter that it was in the service of the fictional Anti-Government Forces in the Kingdom of Asran's civil war, right?

You can't really get much more Soviet than a Yak-38, regardless of what the colour-scheme and decals used are... Amirite?

Yes, this is fine, as long as, in your alternative universe, the aircraft is either built buy, or operated by, a 'Soviet' state. If it was built in the Soviet Union and then transferred to, or captured by, it's current operators then that's okay.
