for my birthday December 27th I may have a (Soviet-built) KhAI-3 model, resin 1/72, but I am almost sure I will build it not as a plane of the Soviet Union (or other socialist country) but as a "dream of the world". Does the "Soviet designer" qualify it for this GB? or should I post it in the general Aircraft section?

Hi Tophe, can I ask for a bit more info on this one please? If it has a Soviet (USSR citizen?) designer, then where is it being built and who is it being operated by?
Hello,
Models of mine are not machines but mechanical birds, dreams. Here the source will be a soviet airplane, that is all. Is this enough for here? I may post elsewhere, no problem.

Okay, but presumably it will have a backstory? If so, then what will the backstory say about where it was designed and built?

It was designed in the Soviet Union for sure, but then, on this planet, humanity became a friendly family with no border anymore, no nationality at all. Built in Moscow. Does that work?

Just remember, Big Red got the good stuff.  The minion states got the poverty pack versions, the old stock and the leftovers.  ;) ;D

Yes, but the stuff the minions were allowed to design for themselves was often good stuff too. There's nothing 'second-rate' about an L-29 Delfin, L-39 Albatross, SOKO Galeb or Super Galeb or the Orao. I really don't think that if the UK joined the Warsaw Pact voluntarily, instead of being overrun and conquered, the USSR would insist on dismantling the likes of English Electric and Hawker. They might 'plunder' UK industry for any information and expertise that would help their own, and there might be a 'brain-drain' as unenthusiastic British engineers found their way to the USA/Canada/Australia, but I seriously doubt they'd just shut it all down. In real life, there was constant disagreement and negotiation and a limited amout of 'going their own way' in the Warsaw pact, notwithstanding the huge power imbalance between Russia and everyone else.

Thanks H, you just provided the idea for the second build of my GB builds.  Using a kit I had been pondering what to do with.
An aircraft design saved from the scrapheap by the UK crossing the Iron Curtain and then developed into operational use by, oh lets say the Tupolev Bureau with Soviet weapons systems etc.

I am currently in the process of reviving my 100% scratchbuild tank project I had to abandon in april. (Socialist Hungarian T-55 based indigenous tank - of course the steel also comes from the USSR...)
http://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php/topic,41975.0.html
I have all the parts printed out and was already beginning to glue the new paper pieces to the cardboard, when I saw this GB... Of course I would be happy to take part...
...Do I have to wait a whole month till I start or is the process of "creating" the scratchbuilt parts exempt from the "no-glue-rule"?
Vorcha, I discussed this with my fellow mod. We feel that your current build is far too advanced to be included in this group build. I hope to see you continue with that build and finish as the craftsmanship and work you're doing there is stellar.

That said, if I understand you correctly here you are considering starting from scratch again and have printed the parts new, am I understanding this correctly? If that is the case, and you are back to the start with the project, we would prefer that you do limited work until the start of the group build. Your method of construction, while amazing, does present a bit of a gray area for us to consider as mods. Some prep is allowed but some of the pieces you're proposing would really be considered proper building in our opinion.
It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or the fourteenth.

Well yes, you are correct, I was going to start from scratch again. I have printed out new parts for 4 of my tank hulls, laying on my desk...
You're right, if everybody could stretch the rules, there would be no rules in the end.

Since there seems to be more than the usual amount of discussion about the rules for this group build could we have a summary of the rules when finalized so all is clear?

What about a Soviet era Fighter, but read of the Communists winning the Civil War, the White Russians win. Thus the Russian deaigners carry on with designs in similar fashion as they did in real life? Such as a Russian Republic Polikarpov I-153?

The "final" rules will be published in a separate thread and locked once agreed.

As an aside to this. As the Moderator who tends to organise the G.B.'s (and then hand the actual day to day running over to the specific G.B. Mods, who are the real heroes ) I'm going to have a serious think about G.B. rules in general before the first of next seasons, in particular rules 4 & 5. please don't start any discussion here about them but I will open a dedicated thread for this as soon as we have started this build in Feb.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Okay Tophe, we've had a conflab and the decision is that, as long as the Soviet Union still existed when the project started, then this is okay. Good luck with the build. It's an interesting aircraft: kind of like Jack Northrop got a contract from the Greyhound bus company...  ;)

Okay, question under discussion.

Most definitely. We're discussing a lot of this now and will have a summary of clarifications soon.

One thing I think we should keep in mind, there seem to be a few posters over the years that seem to propose wild ideas pushing the rules, but they seem to do so just to see what they can get away with for arguments sake.  A few didn't even seem interested in building in the first pace, just wanted to throw something out. I am not poking at anyone specific here, but please think of our poor moderators!   ;)

For me one of the great things about GB's is the challenge to build something that you would not normally build (or sit one out if you are not in the mood).  I for one relish the chance to make a build to fit the (leaning towards tight) theme, rather than build whatever I want and somehow make it fit the theme. There is a subtle nuance there for me at least.

As always thanks to Chris for keeping up the momentum on these GB's and the mods.  Your work is deeply appreciated!
