His Space Shuttle book made me really, really keen to read this. Excited!

After that you should try his 'Phoenix Squadron' about 809 NAS' Buccaneers aboard the Ark Royal's (the REAL Ark Royal...) last operational cruise, a real nail biter.

It wasn't the last cruise as that was in 1978 the events over Belize City were in 1972.

Is that meant to be a boast because you "were there", or a self-pitying remark about age because it was 35yr ago? Is it worth my pointing out I was born five years and a month or so after the Argentine surrender?...

I've just finished Empire of the Clouds by James Hamilton-Patterson.
I bought the edition with extra photos and was slightly disappointed to read in the preface that 25% of the text was cut to accomodate them.
Obviously not having the original "more wordy" version I can't directly compare but some chapters do feel incomplete.  Although that may be because I knew words had been removed.  Would I have thought that if I hadn't read the preface?  Don't know.  The photos are gorgeous though, especially the big colour double page spreads.
Reading the book made me angry and sad in equal parts.  It details the way the post WW2 British aircraft industry, after a brief flash of brilliance was then declined into the state it is today.
Recommended.

I picked up off eBay a copy of the 1984 British Armed Forces Today 3  :- Fleet Command by Paul Beaver. I had it back in 84 but lost track of it as its a magazine sized booklet but its derived from the old Armed Forces magazine which used to be a handy treasure trove of information I the 80s. There were volumes for the Army and the RAF too as I recall, all with that mid 80s post Falklands timeframe.

Anyway its another of my original 80s source data renewed and I quite like this one as it had the first picture I found of the lightweight Sea Wolf based on the old Sea Cat launcher chassis, which would be nice to see in 1/700 as a projected update/add-on for the likes of the Invincibles, Type-42's, Type-21s and possibly the Leander class.

I managed to get another of my old references from the 80's that I used to borrow as a library book, It Admiral Hill -Norton's The Royal Navy today and tomorrow which is quite amusing as it was published in 1981 so most of tomorrow got adjusted after the lessons of the Falklands  .
