Ordered at Waterstone's Friday and picked up today

August 1914 by Bruno Cabanes. Published in France in 2014 this is the 2016 English translation by Stephanie O'Hara of Yale University (she's also translated the notes and references at the end of the book ) Be interesting to get a French take on this period of the War. The only other translation of a French WWI book I've read was on the Nivelle offensive of 1917.

One interesting fact gleaned as I traveled home on the bus was that August 22nd was the bloodiest day in French military history, 27,000 fatalities, as compared with 19,000 British and Empire on the first day of the Somme. I knew that overall French casualties in these early battles were huge but if pressed would have gone for 1917 and Nivelle for the greatest loss in a day. As I've said before ; you live and learn

Geoff, Is it worth picking up the second edition if you've already got the first?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

The 1956 edition of the Meteorological Office "Observers' Handbook"   Not really relevant to the business of this forum, but for £2, a bargain.  It contains a wonderful quote  ".....the meteorological enclosure should be properly fenced to prevent animal ingress.  Experience from RAF stations has shown that dogs can have deleterious effects on the accuracy of rain gauges......"

I've also had returned from an ultra long term loan (I thought it was gone for good, but he remembered to post it back) my copy of Surgeon Captain Rick Jolly's wonderful guide to naval slang ........"Jackspeak"   It contains a magnificent definition of CHINESE WHISPERS  as applied to defence procurement that I'll post here some day.

Have you seen this regarding a fox that's taking the piss (or rather, leaving it!)?  ;D

No, it hadn't been pointed out to me, thanks!  The other matter that has been pointed out is that animal by-products can corrode  the metal from which the gauge is made

I'm reading "A History of Weapons: Crossbows, Caltrops, Catapults, and Lots of Other Things That Can Seriously Mess You Up" by John O'Bryan.  Light and funny; the author is a professional comedian and amateur weapons enthusiast.

Second hand copy of the Haynes manual "Cracking Contraptions"  Wallace and Gromit.  No2 son has already annexed it (I only bought it at 2pm today) and there's been continuous chuckling from his room ever since.

Another bookazine from WH Smiths.

"Valour in the Air". As the introduction says "the VC has been awarded 1.358 times to 1,355 individuals. Only 51 of these have been to aviators" The book details the background and actions of all these brave men.

I find these bookazines excellent value for money

Found a really worn paperback issue of 'Get Yamamoto' by Burke Davis that was published in 1969!  :o

It was so interesting I read it right through in one session, till around 3 am this morning!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Picked up Warship 2017 on the Amazon Prime day, usual fayre of pre-dreadnaught, WW!, WW2 stuff plus a nice article on the RAN DDL project for what would be their version of the Type 42 from the early 70s, which justified its purchase for me

Amend that it also has an in-depth article on the cancelled Surry class cruisers which were a four turret version of the Exeter's
