Britain's Forgotten Wars : Colonial Campaigns of the 19th Century. Picked this up at the market under Waterloo Bridge for £5 and it is fascinating.

Ian Hernon shows just how Britain gained an Empire mostly by chance and misunderstanding. The sheer folly of some of these battles combined with the utter ineptitude of certain generals makes you wonder how on earth we painted 1/4 of the globe red.
Slaughter upon massacre, often more deaths by disease than bullets, using tactics for the European battlefield in dense African jungle, deliberately insulting the locals in order to provoke a fight....

Completely off the usual subject matter found here:- "The Oxford Atlas of English Regional Dialect" .   Only cost pence in a junk shop in Ludlow!!  I fear that this might start another bout of thread drift; if it does I'll start another thread on " Regional Patterns of Speech"
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you....."

Gondor's Modelling Rule Number Three: Everything will fit perfectly untill you apply glue...

I know it's in a book I have around here somewhere....

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Arrived in the post today via a certain on-line auction site:

Took the house guests to a second hand bookshop (I really know how to show my friends a good time).
Bought myself The Martian, Starman Jones (a mistake as I already have it in my Heinlein collection) and Flying Doctor by Clyde Fenton.
The last one is the autobiography of "the original flying doctor" who operated in the Northern Territory in the pre war years.
As I plan to do some RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service) Whiffs this will serve me well as inspiration.

Good move, I've just read it for the second time. Totally gripping.

I've almost finished Flying Doctor by Clyde Fenton.
Dr Fenton spent his time flying around the Northern Territory in De Havilland products namely Gypsy Moths, a Puss Moth and a Dragon Rapide.  His life reads like a "Boy's Own" tale full of near misses, daring do and crash landings.  Not to mention plentiful run ins with authority and a lot of beer drinking (before, during and after flying).
It shows the very different attitude to piloting that existed just before WW2.  At least in Australia.
It also shows how attitudes of white anglo saxons have changed with its many disparaging comments regarding Indigenous Australians, Indonesians and Chinese (reminds me of my grandmother who would have been of a similar generation).
All in all I recommend it.  I am constantly having to put it down to say to Mrs z "I can't believe he did that" followed by a reading out loud of the relevant section.

Took delivery during the week of Fairey Rotodyne by David Gibbings and Air America by Christopher Robbins.
