The Wooksta!

Basically, a thread for misc. ideas I've had but don't want to do anything with.

Canadian Beaufighters
Licence production of Blenheims was undertaken in Canada, so why not Beau's?  Bonus points for shoving in US engines.

Russian Hampdens
They did get them and did use them but with British engines.  Late war refitted with Soviet engines?

Dornier Do 24s
Finland would seem to be a likely candidate for these, ditto Turkey.  I rather like the idea of the former refitted with Bristol Mercuries and in overall silver with post war roundels.

Indeed - if Australia did it with Beauforts then why not Canada with Beaufighters.

Also CASA 2.111 options.  I'm still plodding away with my CASA 2.217 alternative to the 2.111 - why not post-war a CASA 2.1088 version of the Ju88 (or better still a 2.188) with Centaurus engines?

Doubt the 88 could take a pair of Centaurus (although the 388 was slated for Jumo 222s in at least one variant), but Hercules are more likely.

Spain did have a number of Ju 88s anyway, so Spanish production is also possible.

Speaking of Beaufighters, Lee, do you still need those undercarriage parts? I've found my Matchbox one in the stash, and it isn't at the stage where I need them, it can still be done wheels up.

Oh, yes!  Sorry, forgot all about them.

Note: the Matchbox kit doesn't have the open bay for the retracted tailwheel, so whatever you do with it gear up, you've got to keep the tailwheel down.  Although it could have been locked down and the well plated over whilst operating with whatever tin pot third world dictatorship you want to have it flying with.

C'mon, Lee, it's whiffery!

Hence the suggestion.

Dave, I've never, ever subscribed to the "It's Whiffery" theory and never will as it's really just a copout.  For me, whiffs are a "turn left" scenario and thus should follow reality.  They have to be plausible and believable.

I'm tempted to put a pair of Hercules on a Blenheim but have declined as it would have been unable to take the weight and power of the engines.

Anyhoo. Has anyone considered building a Junkers Ju 290 in Czech Air Force markings?  They had one but never really got it to work and it never wore the markings.  They did try to sell it to the Isrealis.  And any other Luftwaffe aircraft left on Czech soil is also plausible in Isreali colours.

Just a thought on this mechanism: I have a vague back story idea, which I've never got round to using yet (and may never do so, so feel free to borrow and adapt) in which WWII finishes with the USSR in a significantly weaker position, leading to the Czechoslovakia and a number of other countries becoming 'compulsory neutral' buffer states with legal restrictions and status similar to real-world Austria or Finland. Their armed forces are severely limited in scope and nature of equipment and anything they buy in has to be scrupulously balanced between East and West and approved by both sides. This makes indiginous development of anything left on their territory in 1945 both attractive and worthwhile.

Essentially, the point of this scenario is to give an excuse to build 'Luft-'46' style projects with something other than swastikas on them for people who find the latter objectionable. you can make it as realistic or fantastic as you like, either sticking to the immediate post-war era and productionised real projects, or extrapolating it far into the future (Czech space programme..).

You could have the Czechs remaining in the West's sphere of influence as Patton had pretty much swept through the country in his mad dash to reach Prague before Kammler left.  Have Truman being a bit more willing to stick his neck out against Uncle Joe. Alternatively, have the Germans in the west surrender quicker in the hope of being in the western sector rather than being punchbags for the Soviets.

Still, any Luftwaffe stuff in Czech colours is also a nice idea.  I'm currently tempted with a real world Bf 108.  Sure I've an Me 208 somewhere that would also look nice in Czech colours.  And there's an He 162 that's just begging for a different scheme...

Given that the SS formed a division in Bosnia with muslim volunteers, thanks to the evil Haj Al Husseini, have some of them trained as pilots to fly Fi 103Rei-4 Reichenbergs?

Could Ju 88s and/or Bf 110s with long range tanks and a small bombload reach Palestine (specifically Tel Aviv) from bases in Crete?  Thinking late '41 here, possibly early 42.

I didn't know about the SS Muslims. Fi103s would make perfect sense in that case.
Maybe have them piggybacked within range of Tel Aviv and carrying something nastier than explosives?

I like the idea of Post-War Luftwaffle kit in Israeli markings.
I have a Plan for an Me-262 Aufklarer in Israeli Sand and Black...

This thread has some interesting 262 variants...

Just drilling out the attachment lugs on a Novo Blenheim...

The kit comes with skis and Romanian markings.  Has anyone considered a Romanian one in winter camo and skis on the Russian Front?  Not one for me, I might add - I *really* dislike collaborators...  So that's out there for anyone else to try.

And I'll throw in licence built Swedish ones fighting with the Finns, again on skis.  And Norwegian.

Finnish Blenheims re-engined with German engines?  Jumo 211 and Bramo 323 are more powerful than a Mercury but not too heavy.

Danish Fairey Battles.  They were interested in the one that got cancelled but was reworked into the Fulmar, so they get Battles or Blenheims instead?  I'll also throw out the possibility of Belgium getting Blenheims instead of Battles.

I've had a Mk.1 Blenheim in my Spanish Civil War pile forever. Would be Republican if I ever get around to it (I've re-written the history quite a bit...)

Well the Italians managed it from farther away than Crete:

Ta for that.  So, Hurricanes for defence in a nightfighter scheme is perfectly plausible.
