the snake decal appeared, I think, on a Matchbox 1/72 model of the FW 190 A-8, but has it ever appeared in 1/48 scale as well??

???

I think you mean the famous red and white snake decoration on the flank of a Ju 87 operated in Libya?

There's never been a Matchbox Fw 190 with such a decal/decoration (or one in 1:48 either) - and even though the machine has been offered as a kit by several manufacturers (I can remember Revell and Hasegawa, but not Matchbox since the kit is is a late D) it is uncertain whether the snake was carried on both sides or only on portside - since there are AFAIK only post side pics of the real aircraft.  ;)

In WhiffWorld it was probably on both sides AND on top and under the wings as well!  ;D

Built that Ju 87 a couple of times and the markings are on at least one 1/72 aftermarket sheet I have.

One sheet I've seen has the snake in grey and white as apparently there is some discussion as to what the colours actually were.

Could be referring to that 'Wurm' thingy on the cowlings of some FW190s...tatzelwurm?? or something.

Gondor

No reason why an Fw190 could not carry an appropriately sized Red/White snake just like the Ju 87 did especially if it was the ground attack version of the Fw190.

Yes, there are snakes in 1/48 like this e.g.:

Or check Eagle Editions site.
Or search for more with the word "Schlangenschwarm".

Did you check the Eagle decals? They offer 2 snakes for 15 bucks and no Graf to worry about. ;)

Allan

have checked and they look great, but not for now as my 190 in progress has a yellow nose...perhaps for a later build, then
thanks again

Almark did a 1/72 sheet (I have a copy).  IIRC the instructions say the snake was white and the RLM sand (Sandgelb?)
colour, not the more commonly presented red, as the snake was apparrently compliant with Luftwaffe colour requirements but not necessarily ;) the spirit of said requirements.
The old Revell 1/32 Ju87 had red snakes both sides of the fuselage; the Italeri 1/72 depiction I think does too.
The forthcoming Airfix depiction mirrors the Almark colours.

Just checked my sheet and yes you are right. Memory obviously went into a 50's black and white mode.  ;D
