Yak 9 Dvoynoy: Finished pics pg 6

Finished one for the GB so must be time to start another.  This time not a jet.

This is an interpretation of a dream I had some years back.  I did a sketch at the time which is prolly somewhere in my blog thread.

I am using Airfix Yak 9 parts.

Here's the starting pic (I glued the fuselage halves just before the pic, honest).

A Yak-9 DD actually existed, it was a long range escort version... 

Cool idea - I am curious if the thing "works" without a fuselage extension. From my experience with such twins, just using two standard fuselages leaves the whole thing a bit too short, and then there's the landing gear issue. You can use just the outer wheels, OOB, but with inward-retracting layouts the stance will later be very wide and (IMHO) look pretty goofy.

Anyway, I like the concept, and the result should look very good.

The round thing is the housing for a lift fan.
When I dreamed of this is was an FW190z.  However I only have one FW190 and this is a Soviet GB.

The idea is fan assisted STOL rather than VTOL.  Also a very low stall speed.

Perhaps Yakovlev developed the landing gear on the Yak 9д and later used it on the jet powered Yak 15Db?

Days working on Yak without drawing blood - 1

Today I finished cutting out and bracing the top of the fan housing and cleaning up the second fuselage.
For a mould produced 4 years before I was born in 1963 it shows every decade of its age.  Flash, sinkage, loss of detail, raised detail and rivets the size of side plates.  Lovely.
The fuselages will still need a dab of filler but at least now they have vaguely decent shaped under nose intakes and more scale thickness edges to the ventral radiator (and the rear end of it opened up instead of being solid).
Reading the ideas column of my stash spreadsheet I see that I had pondered putting a turret on one fuselage.

I cut a chunk out of one of the fuselages today and inserted a section of tube to make a turret mount.  I'll be using a turret I found in my "glass" parts bag.  It has an Italian feel to it and is possibly from a Savoia Marchetti.  Single gun.
I also glued a wing to the other fuselage.
Not knowing what the "standard" arrangement was for this sort of thing i've put the turret on the left fuselage making it Right Hand Drive.

The only RW Zwilling that I know that had turrets was the He-111Z and that had two of everything. That means your Yak 9д IS the 'standard'.
