When do you paint?

Depends on what the kit represents and if grandchildren are helping.  I'm a wargamer so the level of required detail is subordinate to battlefield survivability. 

Aircraft - generally paint the interior bits first usually before or as they are fitted, then the outside.  If I can fit the clear parts last or after painting I do so. Well most of the time.

Tanks - usually after building but before tracks are fitted.

Wheeled vehicles - again usually after building though the inside of the cab gets painted before the roof goes on.  Sometimes the driver/crew and tyres get painted on the sprue before construction. 

Figures - not being converted are painted on the sprue if possible.  If being converted - afterwards.
