I was just about to post that very same sentiment.   Verdammt, dieser cheap tinfoil does nozink! 

Honestly, that would look right at home in some other sci-fi universe.

Things made more progress yesterday evening, it' fascinating how much small stuff you can stick onto such a more or less scrathed thing until you get to a certain surface plasticity!

Anyway, two more impressions with the solar panels in place again, but still not finished:

Proportions are IMHO good (reminds me of a Kilrathi fighter ship from Wing Commander?), things like some more guns are missing, and the panels need some attention, too.
We are closing in on the painting stage, though. I am truly excited to see this thing with a coat of primer and/or the final light grey finish, when everything blends into each other.

So what are the big guns either side of the nose? Ion cannon or Turbo lasers?
Either way that thing will pack a punch.

Armament is actually based on the contemporary TIE Defender. Let me quote prematurely from the description (err, the Imperial TIE Escort Fighter Pilot Manual):

The TIE Escort Fighter carried a formidable array of weaponry in two modular weapon bays that were mounted alongside the lower cabin. In standard configuration, the TIE/E had two L-s9.3 laser cannons and two NK-3 ion cannons. The laser and ion cannons could be set to fire separately or, if concentrated power was required, to fire-linked in either pairs or as a quartet.
The ship also featured two M-g-2 general-purpose warhead launchers, each of which could be equipped with a standard load of three proton torpedoes or four concussion missiles. Depending on the mission profile, the ship could be fitted with alternative warheads such as proton rockets, proton bombs, or magnetic pulse warheads.
Additionally, external stores could be carried under the fuselage, which included a conformal sensor pallet for reconnaissance missions or a cargo bay with a capacity for 500 kg (1.100 lb).

No idea about the details - but this thing has a canonical benchmark, and actually carries less punch than the smalle TIE Defender!

The smaller guns could be heavy blasters or whatever for anti-infantry work and firing at lightly armoured targets - they won't even scratch the paint of something like an AT-AT, much less a capital ship, but regular lasers would be overkill against "soft" targets or even lightly armoured spacecraft (bearing in mind that the Z-95 Headhunter originally carried six heavy blasters until this was retconned into the more familiar two lascannons, and was still a viable opponent against other snubfighters). Also, heavy blasters generally are described as having a higher rate of fire (ie. totally not a balancing mechanic from WEG roleplaying games) which would be useful against fast-moving and/or multiple targets.

Really, as armed, the thing would be actually optimized against friendlies (regular unshielded TIE Fighters/Interceptors/Bombers), which would not be a surprise at all, since per the old Expanded Universe, the Empire seemed to be rampant with warlordism, attempted secession, and internal power struggles even well before the Battle of Endor. Though this low-intensity civil war against supposed loyalists (as opposed to against the Rebellion) was probably Sheev's intent all along - you know, divide and conquer so that no one individual could get powerful enough to overthrow him with the flavour-of-the-month superweapon against which even his Force powers would not protect.

Well, I would consider myself as a SW fan, since I grew up with Episode IV-VI, but then they lost me (Jar Jar killed off my relationship...). I never was and am into details, so I just take up the pieces I find (the internet is a wondrous thing - so much data, but so little sense...) and use it for my plans. Consequently, there's no correlation between the text and what you see on the model... 

Anyway, I am looking forward to the painted/primed thing, too. Dug out my favorite tones and already started masking parts of the canopy with Maskol. I hope that it will stop raining until evening, so that I can apply grey primer today.

To be honest, whilst I enjoyed the early Star Wars films I never really got into the whole thing that seriously. Wouldn't go out of my way to catch the films, but hey ; each to his own

Lady Luck smiled again! Weather was fine, so I could pull out the rattle cans...

It's fascinating: weeks of minute preparations, and then you add a coat of primer (and later the final colors) in just a mere two minutes per layer. 

Things look good, and no fatal hazards, as far as I can tell at the moment. Pics to come.
