Greg, the "scooter/truck" was a lot dirtier if I recall correctly, adding that muck will let it pop.
"Mind that bus." "What bus?" *SPLAT!*

I know nothing-to-very-little of the specific productions but the general anime look is right on the mark!

If you want to take a look at the inspiration behind the mini-truck, it's the one use to move the family's belongings to their new home right at the beginning of the movie...

That little trike-truck looks fabulous loaded up
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Yeah, in the end, there was no real choice.  It looks so much better with stuff. And there was no way but to build all the stuff. ;)

I spent most of my time tonight sanding down the submarine, so I'll spare you the PSR action pictures.

After I got it done, there was just enough time left to add a few more bits to the aero-Kayak and finally cut and glue the wings for the Nausicaa glider do-over.

The seats are going to be tricky to get right I think...

I hope I got the angle right this time...  :banghead:

Thanks!

I love this. I am always in awe of people who can scratch build and do it well
Brilliant

strobez

Thanks sykotik! (heyyyy... I just got that!). Like anything else, I think the scratchbuilding gets easier with practice.  I don't know if I'd say I'm good at it yet, but  I'm just having fun, so that's what counts!

Speaking of fun... a few more random updates...

Scratched up a few chairs for the aero-Kayak using a bit of wire and some styrene seats. I decided to drill holes to attach them, so of course that resulted in misalignment and me tearing the seats apart while trying to force the issue and then having to rebuild them in situ.  :banghead:

The Nausicaa Mehve glider Mk.II is coming along.  I formed the engine cavity and starting trying to cover up my mistakes...

Ahhhh... putty.

As for the submarine... I nearly forgot about the bottom rudder. But a quick bit of a shaped F-14 tail and some wire...

And stuff is red!
Thanks!

Just a quick update.  I basically went through each mini project and decided to work on each until I had all the parts I needed.  Of course that didn't stop me from adding up a new project. :)

First up... scratched up the engine for Jiro's bird plane.  I used the leftover engine from the kit I bashed the mini-truck from and added a few bits from a Space Battleship Yamato kit and my favourite Spad XIII. I also sawed a MiG-21's wheel in half to get two and then I scratched up the steering wheel outta basically nothing.

For the Aero-Kayak, I mainly added details to the "flappy wing things" and created the steering column and wheel.

For the Nausicaa kit I'm still PSRing and trying to figure out how to replicate the engine I created for the first go-round...

For the Ponyo submarine... I've got the first coats of paint done and you can start to see how this is going to look. Still more painting to be done.

Finally, since I'm more or less trying to incorporate one 1/72 vehicle from every Studio Ghibli film, I decided to include a new project based on the film, Arriety.  The obvious choice was to 100% scratchbuild the boat the family uses to leave in at the end of the movie. It was a very quick build and all the parts just fell together.  Quickest build I've ever completed...

Thanks!

Looks like it could do with a bit more PSR to me... ;D

Mrs z and I watched Laputa (again) on Sunday night. Can't wait for your armoured train or your 1/72 Goliath...

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Heh... there's always one in every crowd.  ;D

I think I might have to call size limitations at a 1/72 Tiger Moth.  I was thinking a few stray thoughts about the little choo-choo train the kids escape on, but that might open me up dangerously close to scale model train building... ;)

I do have a slightly different Laputa mini project in mind though... something that sent me to YouTube to study "how to" videos.
Thanks!

LOL... no... not quite.

Although maybe I should. Tonight was a "quit while you're just a bit behind" session.  I don't know why I bother priming anything.  It never delivers good news.  :banghead:
Thanks!

Greg

Alright... after a slightly desponent pause post-primer, I'm back at it.  I sanded the absolute hell out of Jiro's bird plane until there wasn't a single spot to be seen.  Of course I purposely didn't clean my glasses after all that sanding...

Anyway, I primed it again to a gleaming shine... and then, while removing the tiny bit of tape I used to protect the finish from the clamp teeth that had gotten stuck together I promptly snapped off one of the wheel struts.  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I glued it back on carefully and am having an internal debate on how much I care about the mark it left. I purposely, in my shame, took an update pick from the other side...  :-X

Switching gears while it was drying, i got to work on the Nausicaa Mehve do-over.  I cut new slats and glued them on at a bit of an angle. I wanted to attach them with a bit of wire, but even my tiniest drill bit was too big for the job.  I also scratched together a tiny little engine out of some odds and ends.

The back end should be visible enough...

I'll have to place the front in carefully so that it sits straight.

Meanwhile, I started up a new little project. This is the one that had me watching YouTube... and visiting a scented candle DIY shop in Seoul.  Who knows, knitting a Totoro might be next...

Y'know... they look much skinnier when they just get out of the shower...

Luckily he put on some pants... well, one leg at a time...
Thanks!
