Some superb models in the competition there for sure, thanks for posting the pics. 

A couple of things come to mind though.

1) It'd be nice to see the Senior Champion model that ISN'T a really large scale model one year. For many years now the winner has always been LARGE scale, and this year was no exception. It's just as much work building a well detailed small model as it is a large one, in some cases more so. Big isn't always better.

2) I noticed quite a few entries with 'Disqualified' notes stamped on their entry cards. With the current mind bogglingly complex system of classes it's not difficult to place a model in the wrong class, but is it beyond the wit of the Competition staff to just move such a model? This is a show about modelling, not weaving a path through complex regulations. One of the only classes not to have this problem is 'our' class, no 33.

A great weekend, the travel was not too bad either going or coming back. I would have preferred to have not had to work the morning of the show and set off from work in Salford as it made the Friday somewhat tiring. The fears of the delayed set up proved to be unfounded mostly due to the traders all getting in on their time slots and the only van was the Special Hobby one in the corner next to us, so the Roller shutter was able to be closed sometime after 5pm so we didn't freeze our nuts off in the cold draft.
Good to meet up and catch up with people as many I hadn't seen for a couple of years after missing last year and only doing the Saturday the year before, so nice to be back to a full weekend again. A shame we were scattered across town and in different groups, and that the traditional Chinese Buffet had gone in the Telford town Centre re-development, so we couldn't have out mass banquet, but the food we had in our smaller groups was good as those Mixed grills sure filled in a gap created by missing meals.
Probably spent more than I planned to but got some nice stuff and considering that was effectively my holiday for this year I can quite happily justify the spending and afford it. Didn't get round to doing the restock on tools and materials I planned, but that's something that's not to hard to do on-line or with LMS so no great loss.
Nice to see and discuss Cancelled Projects with some of the visitors although it does sort of emphasise that we should really plan better and include some form of labelling as explanation for next time.
Was good to discuss builds and formulate plans for the coming year with Martin, Harro, Chris and Joe so have an idea of what I can work on for the next 12 months, so much so that instead of running away screaming from the model room or giving it a good clear out, I instead actually started my next builds (and did a bit on one I had to put aside to get other finished for SMW), just a little too cold for Spraying until I swapped heaters out to counter act the window being ajar.

So its on to next year, no more shows till the end of January so plenty of time to get something built, the new Phantom which will require a bit of work is not due till December so that's probably going to be a Xmas build at best.

I've said for years that labelling is especially important for Whiffs. Everyone knows the back story of a USAF F-16, but most people will look at a whiff and not know whether it's a mistake, a joke, a cancelled project or the product of a thought-out alt-history story unless it's explained to them.

I know table space is an issue and to that end I've redesigned my cards to be one-per-model instead of two. Display bases with plaques would help too (especially if they combine several models from the same background with one expalanation) as would flying stands where the model is above the label rather than next to it.

I'm not proposing it be compulsory: I'm well aware of your stance on such matters. If you want informed observers to figure yours out for themselves, that's fine, and probably appropriate for the subtle kind of things you like. For stuff like mine and many others though, where it's as much a product of imagination as research, the punter hasn't got a snowball's of figuring it out for themselves no matter how much they know.

If you want informed observers to figure yours out for themselves, that's fine, and probably appropriate for the subtle kind of things you like. For stuff like mine and many others though, where it's as much a product of imagination as research, the punter hasn't got a snowball's of figuring it out for themselves no matter how much they know.

quite but I agree a bit with Wooksta as I like to see the punter squirm when he or she is utterly had!

Firstly it was nice to meet so many old friends and make some new ones, especially those who'd crossed the "pond". Great to see you Brad and Ed. Only sorry that Jim and Simon couldn't make it.

Secondly if I didn't get a chance to chat with people then I apologise but it was a very busy and tiring weekend. I swear when I tried to get my boots on this morning my ankles had swollen ?

Thirdly I think we may need a S.I.G. wine rack next year ? 

My journey up was a bit of a pig as the train broke down  However in all fairness to Virgin (not my favourite brand) they have already paid me my compensation without the need to claim. Journey home yesterday was better although the train was very busy as far as Birmingham Int.

Show was very good and I'll have money I missed half of it ! Many thanks to those who took all the pictures 

I did notice a couple of things. there appeared to be far more kids attending this year. A couple were very interested in Martin's Hanuebu's and one stunned both his dad and grandad when he told us he was getting one for Christmas.  Ed S didn't know anything about it either 

The other was the number of woman who were not necessarily just in tow so to speak, but actually taking an interest and asking questions. Not just us but all around the show. Has to be good for the future of the hobby, but it does make judging "best in show" more difficult 

The best result for me personally though ? For various reasons I've been feeling a bit down in the dumps (depressed is far to strong a word) for a couple of months recently, but I've been much cheery since Saturday and hopefully have shaken it off. So thanks lads it was a good show all round.

Well I like labeling the model along with a bit of the story about it. That is why my labels are printed A5 size, and in agood number of cases on both sides.
Telling the story can really screw with the viewers mind. Great fun!

We have had the labelling debate a number of times over the years. And as Ive said before, its each to their own.

If you want to label your builds. Fine, fill your boots and have fun. The same goes for those who dont want to label their work.

We are as broad a church as you can get, we have room for almost every view point.

I was talking about our Project Cancelled SIG where I felt we probably needed a label to explain the various sub themes so browsers could understand the concept.

Individual model labelling is not worth the risk with the fuller tables to be honest unless you number the models on the layout and provide a separate list as visitors will try to lean over the display to read the label and often forget their camera, lanyard or clothing swinging below them catch other models....
It probably works with much fewer but larger models where you can use a larger font and put an explanation next to the model.

Those who wished to could leave brief notes on their build behind the table so whoever was manning it could consult them to answer questions.

How is this picked?  I ask because i've noticed whenever visitors get to vote on something like best of show then it is inevitably the biggest shiniest thing there that gets the choccies.
