At little more than the price of the current boxing of the Airfix mk IIa/Va which includes the bits for an early mk I.  If you're prepared to wait or shop around, the price of CMR Spitfires has well and truly plummeted.

That Matchbox F-104, either single seater or two seater, could not be said to be 'best in class'.

Indeed, the single seater was the singular reason that I got into Whiff modelling. I built one as a review kit for Scale Models Magazine back in 1972, and started the review by saying 'If I wanted to build an F-104 in 1/72 scale I wouldn't start with this one!' 

The Editor, the late Ron Moulton, wouldn't print it like that and I wouldn't back down, so I converted the F-104 to an RAF Starfighter F3 from 92 Sqdn.  The rest, as they say, is history. 

That's a great story, Kit! Thanks for sharing. I imagine a lot of us don't remember exactly what or when our first what if projects were.  Good on ya for not shredding your journalistic integrity.    I don't "trust" some reviews I find.. . . ..

Super flimsy... I hate those type of boxes. They just plain suck all around.... from the useless way they open (can't have any convenient trays to hold things while I work) to the thinness and even how they "look" they just "look" flimsy, too.

I have some old, tiny kits and even with the small size the boxes are nearly stout enough to stand on. Some even have metal bits akin truss plates.

I'm glad you keep all your "old" stuff. I've read recently about a feller that just tosses his in the garbage can when he needs to make room for more. I can't even throw out my old junky "kid" models! 


This arrived in the post today. I was going to use an old Lindberg "B" model but it just wasn't "right" for various reasons and I really wanted a "D" model anyway so when I saw this, I bid on it and managed to pick it up for a song:



With that.... the "Moo-Cow P-47" in Holestein Cow Camo and Polish markings is a project that is back on the "short list" of things I'd like to start soon.

1974 original issue.  Should be numbered A8 on the end (in Hasegawa's seemingly illogical system).
Don't rely on the decals working, although you might be lucky.
I have the 1980 reissue (Blue B8).

So that's what the differing color bands are then huh, different boxings?.. I always wondered about that. 

Looking at them.. the decals seem alright but I won't be using them anyway.. I have some bits and pieces here and there in other kits that I will use.  I tempted all to pieces to get started on this one. From what I can gather, it's a rather nice kit for the age! I like how it has engraved panel lines.

The trouble with old Hase decals is they may look fine but as soon as you put them in the water they break up into zillions of little bits. 

I always spray my older ones with a Klear coat first, but then you have to trim them of course.
