OK, So What Happened..?

So I fell out of the hobby for far too many years.  I got back into it a few months back and this was my first board to post on, because it was always my favorite and the one with the least criticism and the most positive discussion, no matter the topic.

I just posted my second build since getting back in, another RW build, so I get if there are no replies, but I noticed that my first post, another RW build it only like 6 topics down.  What happened?  Did the Whif hobby die?  Did everyone migrate to another board?  Does nobody post anymore?

I loved the social aspect of this hobby that I got when I was big into it back in 2005-9 and posting here a lot.  I hope that isn't gone now that I'm back on the bench.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

What's happening is that you're posting in the general part of the Completed Projects board, but most people put their builds in the appropriate sub-boards for aircraft, ships, sci-fi etc... Go and have a look in those and you'll see all sorts of activity. There's plenty going on in GBs too.

Nice to see you back here by the way.

I considered that, and to be honest the activity in the subboards seems the same or sometimes less than the main page.  The level on the sub board might be higher, but its not what it was 6 years ago.  What happened?  And I don't mean this as a challenge or confrontational post. Hell, I was gone for years.  I just want to know where all the cool activity from 2012 is.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

You should try the 'Read all unread post' link. You'll probably be deluged in posts.

In general there's two pages worth of posts EVERY day on here, and at the weekends it's busier.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Firstly I'm not sure how you read the site, so it could be that the majority of posts are in sections you perhaps only glance at ?

Secondly and trying to answer your question, then from my point of view, as a moderator, the total number of posts has probably dropped since you were last around. Could probably prove that statement one way or another by checking the stats but can't be bothered I'm afraid. Why ? Difficult to say. There is now direct competition with Greg's board, although many here post on both, but that doesn't provide the full answer. I think there are probably more builds on site then we saw historically but maybe not as many comments ? If you looked at the total number of posts then quite probably a small number of people contribute a large number of total posts, again I can't prove it. That is fairly normal in most forms of group activity however. Another reason is the growth of other forms of social media, Facebook, twitter et al, where some people also post. Again without being to prove it I think that "dilutes" responses here.

On the other hand it may simply be, and quite likely is, a cyclic thing.

Ha!!! That's how I found this!!

When I "get caught up" with all the topics I've already posted in that show up in the "Show New Replies to Your Posts" link I hit that one. It's basically a "show all the stuff people have been talking about the past couple of days" button.

After that I'll visit specific boards like the "Pictures Post" board or Whiffies one to try to catch things I miss (the blogs, too). I don't do this very often, however.... but times like this evening I "get around." That's how I found the F-16 you posted, AD, as well as this thread.

Full disclosure... I don't click on these two links as often as I should because I'm pressed for time. There is a lot going and I miss a lot...   BUT, I try to rectify that with the handy links. Which, by the by, are up at the top, toward the left, near the header:

Them there links are my two best friends for navigating around.  ;D   It's not immediately apparent they they ARE links, though, so I hope this helps along with the rest of the great  advice from the others ...   and welcome back!!

Chris.

40 years of working with statistics won out in the end and I had a look. I thought they might be in the administration section partially aggregated. Well there are some stats, but not ones that would answer this question. So to get an actual answer you would have to collate a vast amount of data manually and it would take eons, seriously. I wouldn't have given the task to a work study kid who was annoying me

What I would say however is that as a Moderator I do read every single post, every day unless I'm away. That task can take from 30 minutes, very rare, to 3 hours, equally rare. Normal ? Say an hour to an hour and a half. If I've been away for 3/4 days it can take a day. Did it previously take longer ? Well I can't remember any 30 minute days back when you are talking about, but I'm fairly sure the average was pretty much the same.

Hope that helps

Chris
