I'd like to do one of the tail-sitter VTOL designs as Blue Angels: I've got both a Lockheed Salmon and a Convair Pogo now.

Visions of them doing a mass vertical take-off then all rolling 360 deg in unison... ;D

See the backstory for my Hawker-Convair Osprey, 7 paragraphs up from where the Modelling bit starts.  ;D ;)

Oh that's cool: I'd forgotten that bit - cheers!

We should build up a library of tail-sitter VTOL display maneuvers...

I've always wished the RAF had a taken a leaf out of Dizzy's book and equipped the Reds with Harriers.

OK, the fuel costs would have HORRENDOUS and the number of noise complaints would have reached epic proportions, but the displays would have awe inspiring.  :o :o

And NONE of your Frecce Tricoloris, Thunderbirds, Blue Angels or anyone else could have come anywhere near them!  ;D ;)

I like the Hinomaru Spitfire, but I'd have added a radial for more credibility.  ;)

Makes me wonder what this might look like...?  :o

BTW: a Blue Angels Buccaneer sounds spectcular. The "Blue Whale"?

That's exactly what it looked like, yes.

I built the first one back in the 70s but it got smashed during a house move and Mike McEvoy persuaded me to reproduce it, but I've only got as far the building the airframe and painting it blue. The yellow bits need a LOT of care and paint layers.

I suppose I should have painted them first..........  :banghead:

The Ki-61 had a water-cooled V-engine: maybe the Japanese Spit could be the result of an alternative pre-war collaboration?

Then I'd rather go with a Hispano-Suiza engine. IIRC, one was tested on a Japanese Navy A5M - a very pretty aircraft.
But a Spitfire with a Nakajima Sakae (because it's pretty small) should work and even look good. I have an AZ Models Spitfire Joy Pack somewhere...  :o

A bit Like this Ash-82 engined Spit by McGreig but slimmer:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Can't think what to call these, especially without a back story: Dieselpunk Messerschmitt Racing Car maybe?

Anyway, Dieselpunk Messerschmitt Racing Car sort of thing by Ryan Wheatstone:

Be interesting if it's still got the nose cannon fitted  ;) Looks like it's still got the m.g.'s
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

That's almost a whole genre in itself! Seen quite a few on various sites over the years, especially Bf.109's & Spitfires but including a few P-51's & a P-40.

When they're done well they are excellent, that one's a bit low-middle-range quality-wise.

Edit: A few examples;

While not a racer, this one's flippin' awesome!
