Now with new cut-outs!

... and putty.   :-\

A lot more putty on the underside, to fair into the wings. I probably should have used strips of plastic, but this should work.

it does look very space fighter at the moment

I got the ailerons on - that is a huge slab of wing. I don't think it really needs enlarging, what with the LERX. As you can see, I put the verticals together sans changes or additions ... I'm re-thinking that.

F7U-3 Cutlass - 051
More putty is needed to fair the LERX into the leading edge slats. I was thinking about a new, larger radome, but after looking at my greeblies I've decided to leave well enough alone. I guess I could do a "Harrier Mk III" type laser thimble, but that'd mean sacrificing a Harrier. Also, that's not really a US style of aircraft add-on - more likely to be a 'flashlight' under the nose, ala Tomcat.

F7U-3 Cutlass - 053
As I said - a huge slab of a wing ...

F7U-3 Cutlass - 054
More slab appreciation here. Also, the required additional putty on the LERX-slat junction. I also found a pilot, and have started the mods for the stabilizers.

F7U-3 Cutlass - 055
Most model aircraft rudders have fairly large, flat glue-areas. This one is no exception, making cutting them apart post-gluing quite a chore. There will be trimming to size/shape, and a whole lot of PSR shortly. :)

F7U-3 Cutlass - 056
Pilot Johnny Cutlass in his petri dish, so he won't get lost - he's quite petite. I found him on one of the sprues from the donor F-4. I hope he'll be OK with the increased work-load - no GIB on his next ride. :)

Coming along nicely

Leave Johnny Cutlass in that Petri dish and he may well end up with a co-pilot

I do love a good cell division joke.  ;D ;D

Looks good, Scotaidh!!  This is a beast of a project, man, I can't wait to see it finished.

I must confess that I do thoroughly enjoy the building process, even PSR, more than having a completed model for which I must now find display space.  I usually only make time for them on weekends - that way glue, putty, paint, etc., have all week to dry before I get my sticky fingers on them again.  (As humid as it's been here lately, the extended drying time is probably a necessity - yesterday's humidity was 94%, and they're calling for 100% today - yet no rain, oddly.)   :-\

I've only experienced those levels in a couple of places and it wasn't nice. The "upside" was that you were virtually guaranteed a downpour at midday or tea time, which was nice.

PSR seems to be complete on the rudders. I know the one on the right looks a bit bigger than the other, but I measured and they are the same.

F7U-3 Cutlass - 059
Major components complete! Still a bit of PSR on the joints, but ... nearly there! :)

F7U-3 Cutlass - 060
Alignment check - seems OK.

Nice.

I don't know if it's just me, but to my eyes, the Cutlass always looks like a sawn off Sea Vixen.

Really?  Perhaps there's a build in there for you ...  ;)

The "Kiai-coat" of paint. I call it that because it unifies and makes coherent the whole of the project, allowing one to see the whole thing instead of a collage of differing textures and pieces, ;)

That, and it shows where your PSR needs work.

F7U-3 Cutlass - 064
The red-circled areas are where my PSR needs re-touching. Most of the rest is passable, I think.

F7U-3 Cutlass - 065
You know, if it'd been me, I'd have made it a full delta-wing. Perhaps next time ... although the next one might have something completely different. I've always liked the wing on the Victor ...

Yes, Victor wings are glorious. Also agree a delta one of these would be a mighty project!

I do know what you mean Lee. There is something similar. Both are nice looking aircraft in their own ways and very much of the period.
