Falklands HMS Sheffield

Just popped a note about the upcoming Aussie Model Expo, so I had better put up something I have been working on.

Real world build based on this iconic photo


Went to work using venerable Skywave 1/700 HMS Sheffield


Pretty much out of the box, replaced some of the thick deck parts with stretched sprue for the rope guide (must be some sort of technical boaty term)

This built sort of gets down to pulling off the paint work. This is the initial crack at working up the paint.

The etch radar is well worth the effort and looks a treat, much better than the insipid kit part

So ... the Whif is that she didn't sink?  Don't get me wrong - wicked good modeling & painting skills there.

She didn't sink but stayed afloat for 6 days, and was under tow to South Georgia when she sank due to water leaking in in rough seas. However during those 6 days much work was done to recover equipment but also record and examine the damage from which lessons were learnt
Sheffield was a batch 1 Type 42 and strangely Argentina had 2 with the distinctive horns on the funnel.
Had she got to South Georgia it might have been a different story

It's a great paint job and the water effect is excellent.

No fault on you Buzzbomb, but there is a flaw in the original model kit. The wide section of 01 deck behind the boats, which overhangs the deckhouse and goes out to the edge of the main deck, wasn't present on Sheffield. If you look at the picture of Sheffield, you can see that it was originally only the width of the deckhouse itself. The rear portion of this area was widened to accommodate the triple torpedo tubes, but Sheffield was never fitted with those (they weren't ready in time: HMS Amazon had the same problem). The whole length of the deck was only widened on one of the Argentine ships (in order to mount Exocets) and on the Batch III ships. Batch Is and IIs  had the area vacated by the boats widened when the boats were replaced with twin 30mm AAA guns after the Falklands. This error is probably due to Skywave using a mix'n'match selection of sprues to build all the different ships, batches and modifications of the Type 42 and they missed this subtlety.
