I rather like the idea of attack and sensor varants operating together in "hunter-killer" teams.

Here's the tandem-seat attack version for the "killer", Grumman Model 134R:

And the existing airframe, posibly with some sensor changes (perhaps the Apache's sensor turret) for the "hunter" version.

The same site I got the image from also notes that an inflight refueling setup was designed and used during flight testing and by an outfit which had to do a long overseas deployment.  Model both variants with the probe installed.

That two-seater certainly looks cool.
The original "bug-eyed" beastie looks so unusual though.

Alternatives?:

The Israeli ones were Tan with blue undersurfaces, but why not go for a three-colour Israeli upper surface?

Why not Egyptian in desert colours?

West German in Lizard colours overseeing the Eastern Front?

Rhodesian overseeing the northern border with Zambia? Dark Earth and Dark Green wraparound?

El Salvador in a black OV-1 with green  overspray on the tops, plus yellow markings?

Swedish "splinter" camo with big markings, dayglo and a role on the border??

Your local police force??

How's about an Army co-op bird, done up in wrap around gray/green ?

Or a RCN example ? Would make a nice, lightweight ASW bird !

Or, modify it up like Ev showed us there, looks like the canopy from a T-28 Trojan would work good !

The RAF/AAC could have used a squadron or detachment of OV-1 Mohawks or OV-10 Broncos in Belize or Hong Kong for observation, light attack/COIN and for limited maritime patrol.   B)

Expensive and rare, but a two seat A-10 conversion might work here too.....

Closer look and F-4 canopies might work too, but those may be too flat in height...

I'll have to get the Special Hobby Pucara to check, but it appears to be a close match from the 3-views.

Got it, the engines are radically different and the tail is a single vert, but the rest is darn close. The Puc has a single canopy too.

Yeah, I suspect the Pucara's engines are rather smaller, the Asatzou (sp) turboprops being also somewhat less powerful than the engines fitted to the OV-1.  So, it sounds like a very nice OV-1/AV-1 hunter-killer" team could be put together, operating from semi-prepared strips in the modeller's choice of markings.

My thoughts on looking at Evan's drawing, was that's a Pucara with a triple tail. I wonder what the time line of Pucara development was - did any cross-fertilization go on ?

AAC Mohawks in Belize Bryan certainly sounds feasable, very useful on the border with Honduras with a couple of gun pods. Or Australian in the Solomans on peace-keeping duties - overall foliage green.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I found this old picture I cut out from the back of the Army Times newspaper years ago during the late 60's-early 70's. It shows what appears to be a single seat, armed variant of the OV-1 Mohawk. I'm posting a link to the picture as the image I have scanned to big to just post normally and I have no idea how to reduce it.

It would make for an interesting what if. It appears to be armed with bombs and a pair of 20MM guns. I drew on the picture so it maybe that it was armed with only one gun but the aircraft in the background is strafing with two guns. Using an old OV-1 kit and maybe the Matchbox A-10 in 1/72nd scale you could build a reasonable model of this.

I seem to remember eading that Grumman did studies on a tandem seating version of the Mohawk, so a single seat version isn't that much of a stretch,

I believe it's one of Grumman's AX entries and I seem to recall that it's a bit of a scale-up from the Mohawk.  There was indeed a tandem-seat version of the Mohawk, the G-134R, designed for the COIN/LARA program and I intend to splice a Pucara front with a OV-1 to model it.  This one would make a nice complement to it.

Thanks everyone. I could see the Pucara forthe two seater or maybe even an MB336/MB339 cockpit and nose too. Unfortuneatly as I have seen the two seater canopy model seems to look more like the N/AW- A-10 then anything else and there doesn't seem to be a model of an OV-1 in the same scale as the N/AW- A-10.

Actually, HobbyBoss have done the N/AW A-10 in 1/48, and Roden do OV-1s in the same scale.  Hasegawa did a 1/72 Mohawk ages ago, and HobbyBoss are supposedly going to release the A-10 in that scale later.
