With all the recent 'fuss' and seeing this recent picture / box cover

I thought I'd post this - from a recent (beginning of June) visit to Berlin

This one doesn't look quite so healthy!

The memorial / monument to the Berlin Airlift out the front of the airport

and info board for the above

Tempelhof Airfield itself was saved from development when it closed and is now a huge urban park - used for picnics, cycling, rollerblading and windsurfing with rollerblades (whatever the proper name for it is!  ;D)

Oh to be whiffing again :-(

Terrific place, I used to go there for coffee in their café when I lived in Berlin.

There's quite a good model shop on the opposite side of the main north-south road on the west side of the airfield, just south of the main runway too.

I was lucky to land and depart from there (with a Do 228) just before it was closed down. The approach into the middle of Berlin was quite dramatic, and the arrival/departure hall (still in its original style!) as well as the airfield with the huge hangars was also a weird retro experience.

I flew in and out of Tempelhof a few times too, but aboard BA Trdent 2s. The runway there was so short that they had to limit the number of pax on the outbound flights, and I always wondered what happened to those left over.  ;D

Very soon afterward BA moved all it's ops to Tegel, which had much longer runways.

I wonder how many of those Tridents had cameras installed in the belly   ;D ;D ;D
If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

Oddly I can't ever recall landing across East Berlin in those days, we always approached across the Wannsee and Steglitz. But that still meant we crossed a large chunk of East Germany as well, at or below 10000 ft too.

Well having only visited Berlin for the first time last year, I can't comment on flying in or out of Tempelhof, but the two pictures I took at the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin of a model of the Airport might give some idea of the approaches to the runways

What a cracking model.

You can see what Dizzy and I mean about 'heart in mouth' approaches right over the houses! That model shop I mentioned is just about on the pic, ringed in red.
