Oshkosh AirVenture 2018

Here are a few pics from my weekend at Oshkosh. Of particular interest to the zwilling fans will be the real world Zwilling of two YAK 55 aerobatic aircraft joined to make a YAK 110, with the addition of a J85 jet engine mounted on the center wing. Pretty impressive to see it doing an aerobatic routine and making LOTS of noise!

The YAK110. I'll post more pics of it later in the week when I download from the camera.

Ladies and gentlemen may I present...the ugliest thing at Oshkosh!

C-47 that dropped paratroops on D-Day. It was in a boneyard slated for turbine conversion for a Canadian cargo company, but instead need up restored as it appeared on June 6, 1944.

Earlier in the week this was paired up with a Vampire. I was disappointed the Vampire was gone by Friday.

Hard to describe how gorgeous the woodwork on this was in person.

This thing had no apparent woodwork at all.

This thing was TRULY impressive to see fly...but as much as. Try I just cant call it pretty.

I think I counted ten Mustangs

First glimpse of this I got was as it was on its takeoff roll for the Warbird show. I thought it was a MiG-15...until the burner lit!

Goodness gracious, that's a plethora of various types! But then it WAS Oshkosh of course.

I was amazed to see a Meteor T7 there.

Some fantastic stuff there and a couple of slightly off centre ones. I'm just wondering how you'd explain that Yak 110 to the Civil Aviation Authority in the UK ?

The thing about Oshkosh is I never tire of seeing peoples' photos as you always see different things, or some of the same from different angles. Thanks so, so much for sharing!

Did you mean to post something else with this caption? Kermit's Mossie hasn't flown since about 1993 so it would have been BIG news if it had during AirVenture!

Yeah, you're right Zac. I had it in my head one of the Canadian flying ones was going to be at the show this year for the 100th.

The Canadian one's not likely to be seen there ever, unfortunately: the owner doesn't really have his airworthy aircraft fly. Paul Allen's unlikely to send his example anywhere as he seems to keep his at home at Everett, and it took a crowdfunding campaign to get Jerry Yagen's one over from Virginia Beach a couple of years back (I still have the shirt!). Maybe Rod Lewis' will be ready and shipped from NZ in time to attend next year? It may fly by the end of the year.

The Mosquito Pathfinder Trust have bought T.43 NZ2308 ("Subject to completion of funding and the conclusion of an agreement between all parties)" and I believe intend to base it at Duxford. And there's The People's Mosquito organisation which wants to rebuild NF.36 RL249 as an FB.VI and operate it in England. All is not lost :-)

The colony where the vast majority of the work is done has no flying examples either!

There is one being restored at Point Cook but i'm not sure if its intended to fly.

I don't believe so Fred - A52-600 is to be static, from memory. Hopefully an Aussie/group gets together to get one done.

Bring back the F-23, a MUCH better looker.
