Apologies if this is the incorrect forum to post this question.

I have been given official go-ahead to launch a "What-If" Special Interest Group in my neck of the woods  ;D

Thinking of doing a Facebook based SIG.

I have never administrated a SIG - any tips with regards to launching and running a SIG ?

Thanking you kindly

Best advice i can give on running a what if? sig. Three words

Keep it Simple.

The UK SIG has only me as SIG leader and Chris (Brother Narses) as what passes for management. If you can call it that.
We charge no fee's as the news letter (Chris's Job) is only available via email as a PDF. You don't even need to be an IPMS(UK) member to join. Like most SIG leaders in the UK I maintain an open door regarding membership. So long as enough of us are IPMS members to qualify for SIG status were happy.
We don't have our own web site, Most of us infest this place. Happily, SuperTom tolerates our presence. And we share the logo as well.

Democracy? whats that? I've been in post as SIG leader since 2004. No one else wants the job, so its run as a semi dictatorship (part of the reason I'm sometimes referred to on here as OGL " Our Glorious Leader")

Remember your not alone. There are What if? sigs in the Uk and the Czech Republic, there was one in the US but I'm not sure if they are still active. All three have representation on here. I'm sure our colonial cousins will correct me on that one  ;D

Whiffers are still seen in some quarters of the model world as "those weirdos in the corner" but we are scarily becoming more mainstream as the years go by. People will actually stop and talk to us at our stand at shows these days, you still get the odd look of disdain but its now well known we don't bite (much) and that whiffing can be contagious.......
Some of our number wear their "outsiders badge" with pride.

Oh! Don't bother trying to form a definition of what whiffing is, its far to broad a church for that. Believe me I've tried. And failed! This lot is like hearding cats at times.

Above all else. Have fun.........................its a hobby after all.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Size (of the stash) matters.

IPMS (UK) What if? SIG Leader.
IPMS (UK) Project Cancelled SIG Member.

I think that'll immediately reduce your audience.  Not only for the not-Facebookers but also Facebookers who don't want to publicise their crazy hobby interests to the World.

What about a subforum on a board like this one?

No, you're ALWAYS referred to as 'OGL'.  ;D ;D ;) ;)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

Right I'm off to a convenient corner for a good sulk  ;)

No seriously Martin's covered all the points and all I can say is best of luck
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing here in The Great White North. First I guess I would have to be an IPMS member, doubt they would allow an unaffiliated SIG. We have a large contingent in the whiffer community, but Canada is so vast that getting together at shows is for millionaires with their own biz-jets. Within driving distance from me we've got Captain Canada and Rallymodeler, both in Sarnia, but even that is about 3.5 hours distance from Toronto.
