An interesting read.
I get inspiration from TV, books, magazines, real life, nature, dreams, movies, songs, clouds, traffic, stuff...
Anywhere really.
When it strikes i'll try to remember to look for appropriate images on the interweb which i'll copy to a folder called references.
If I forget to look it up then it obviously isn't meant to be.
Some things I put in there and forget about. Sometimes I rediscover them later which can be a joy (or a huh?).
Sometimes I can find no really relevant pictures but the idea nags at me for years until I finally do something about it and build it. The Harrier B was like that. I got the inspiration from the F-35 having two versions - the one with the fan and the poverty pack version - but I could find no really relevant pictures and so I just thought about it for years working out the details in my head (a good cure for insomnia) and collecting parts until the RAF100 GB came along.
I've been doing the same with my plan for a Rotodyne 2.0. I have nearly all the obvious details worked out, have most of the parts and should be ready to go by the time we get to the Alt.Flight GB next year.

Hmmmm, very philosophical.............

I have no idea where my inspiration comes from, sometimes the whole model just flashes into my mind in one go, like the PR19 itself and the Rotocrane.

Other times they can be the result of a long thought out process, like the Hawker-Convair Osprey which appeared because I spent a lot of time 'accurising' a KP XFY-1 Pogo, during which it was a logical process to think how such an aircraft might have progressed into production.

Other times it can be by accident, like my current Super Stretch DC8. I've always wanted to build the Braniff Calder DC8-62, and now I have the decals and a well designed DC8-63 kit that's designed to be converted to a -62. But I ended up with a couple of bits left over that would be wasted if I didn't use them, so why not stick them in the middle of another -63 to make an -83?

Sometimes it's the result of an accidental juxtaposition of parts on the bench as two unrelated models are built.
"oh look, that fits there and doesn't it look good".

And other times its the result of a rummage through parts boxes as I desperately look for a way, any way, to inject some whiffinessity into something I otherwise have no idea for.

Mine tends to come from books, magazines, tv and sometimes just out of the blue whilst I'm sitting there minding my own business. That's why I always carry a notepad and pen with me wherever I go just in case. I also tend to come up with solutions to problems in the strangest of places when I'm thinking, or not thinking, about something completely different.

Thank guys for sharing your thoughts on inspiration. I too have had ideas that bug me for years. But haven't start them mainly due to not having a good starting point. I'm currently working on 3 Su-33/34's which I wanted to do for years but never had a good starting point. Now in the age of new model companies popping up what seems like every other month. I now have a great kits to start from and I have been going gangbusters on all of them and really enjoy the different challenges of each of them. Even in photography, I've struggled with capturing an image over the years. Narses, I find myself keep track of ideas as well. At home, I have a number of journal type books to write down ideas. About blogging, built ideas, anything and everything that pops in my head. I also keep a list of ideas on my phone. With my phone, it doesn't matter where I'm at or what I'm doing, I can always keep track of my silliness. I also enjoy, no matter where I go, I can always search for inspirational material on my phone and save it to "The Cloud" and play with it latter when I get home.

I've had an inspiration seeing 2D projects on this site and just had to build it in 3D. Others are ideas that have been rolling around in the old noggin for years. Who knows when or how they got started. Some times

Concur, all my project notes are On Paper, In Folders. (oh, so many folders... too many folders...

)

Most of my notes are kept on paper. I find the act of writing helps me remember

Came in handy 50 years or so ago when I was doing "O" Levels
