I sympathize with strobez, space is at a premium when you live in an apartment (loft) with 2 small children and a wife who finds the hobby an inconvenience. So the smaller scales are preferred.

If I recall correctly, the Brits use the term "loft" for an apartment. As it is, we are currently in a 2 bedroom.

Not really, 'loft' over here in the UK tends to mean the uppermost area of a house or building, the bit immediately under the roof. That space COULD be used as a flat (apartment) if suitably converted, but most are just spaces used for storage.

I bought my house primarily because of its loft (Called 'The Loft' in all my posts here  ) Simply because it was a) so large and b) because its ancient 1850s style of construction meant the area was largely unobstructed, which is rare in more modern buildings.

  A "flat", my bad!  It's been too long since I have watched any British Telly. I'm a fan of Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, and older programs like Black Adder (Really wishing they'd do a special with Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie, and Tony Robinson).

If the loft is converted into an actual, livable room, then it's often called an 'attic'. This may involve more than decorating, since many more modern houses have horizontal roof frames that arn't strong enough to serve as floor beams for a proper room.

My house has an attic, but it was designed into the house from the start so it's okay for strength. Makes insulating it a pain though....
