Got a Tamiya German fuel drums set in Hobbycraft today, because the drum from my stash is battered (inappropriate for a brand new racer) and built up, making it harder to modify. With the Tamiya set I can re-arrange printed and pain ends and filler caps to suit myself.

Well they got the right number of ports in total (six), unfortunately they're supposed to be four exhaust ports and two intake ports (the intakes are siamesed inside the head casting)...

Currently thinking of cutting those pips off and scribing a groove around the base of the lump to make it a 'cold weather cover'

There were a slew of different performance head conversions for those Ford four-pots OHV, SOHC, and DOHC,
so you could mod the top end just about any way you desire.

Oh cheers - I saw a few pics like that at lunchtime and was thinking along the same lines as it happens...

One thing that occured to me was that the GAZ engine might have been supplied to China, modified in-country, and then Trumpeter went at looked at a local one and just assumed it was the same as the Russian original. However I couldn't find any evidence for that...

ADVISORY: don't do an image search with 'Chinese' and 'model' in it at work with your safe-search turned off...

Okay so there has been some progress, some good news and some bad news. No pics yet - camera issues.

Progress: the engine is together, with scratchbuilt mods to make it a little more realistic, and it still fits in the cowling. Still mulling over what to do with the exhaust, but I'm leaning towards having it go straight down and then backwards rather than sideways as in the real one. That's easier to build, and the resultant exhaust stain on the prop blades would be 'fixed' by the later, military version leading it out through the side panel as per the real thing.

Bad news: the upper front panel is wider than the belly plate by a solid 1mm

Only found this out after gluing them together, of course...

I think I'm going to pull the belly plate off again and shim it on either side with Evergreen strip, because that will have the effect of making the whole thing wider, and might solve another problem I've got which is that the fuel drum fuel tank doesn't fit as low between the sides as I thought it would (the sides slope inwards from top to bottom). The other alternative is to scratch a narrower tank.

Good news: the skis I ordered from Brengun, which were out of stock, have come back into stock and are being despatched.

I'm not getting much chance to model during the week these days. I'm too tired after work (get home at 12pm) and whilst four mornings a week are theoretically free, people don't 'respect' them as much as evenings and assume that if you're at home during the day, you're free to do stuff...

I much prefer working 9 to 2 rather than 12 to 5.
I'd actually like 9 to 5 but that's not going to happen.

Yeah, I also find that I'm more reluctant to get involved in anything where I might lose track of time in the morning, since it'll result in me being late to work, rather than just late to bed...

If I go out in the morning for any reason I always put my workwear on, just in case I get held up and have to go straight to work without going home first.

Post teenage years I've always been an early bird. Always far more productive 6 to 12 then 12 to 4. Mind you I can then get a second wind.

I prefer arvo's because I find I'm most productive in the things I like doing (modelling & hanging out here) between 0001hrs & 0400hrs, & I finish work at 2300hrs.

In the mornings I'm a bit reptilian, it takes a while for me to warm up, & then I'm most active when others are seeking the shade & a cold beer.

Just to keep the peace with SWMBO, I do, usually, try to curtail my nocturnal activities & go to bed at about 0200/0300hrs & I usually get up at about 0830 when she's not working or 0930-1030 when she is.

Mind you, I'm well aware that my body clock has been completely stuffed by about 25 years of rotating-roster shift work.

Of course, this has absolutely nothing to do with Weaver's aerosan, which I'm waiting (patiently, I promise) to see more of.

Progress is being made in, in infuriatingly small steps due to the fact that I'm grafting 2mm bits of rod together to make an exhaust and an intake. One version of the exhaust has already been scrapped as it simply wasn't strong enough to work with....

However, in the aftermath inspiration struck, so a workable version is currently drying and there will be photos soon.
