Essex class aircraft carriers generally had 3 white (or other color) dashed lines going down the entire length of the flight deck. (See pic below.)
For my Iowa carrier conversion model which is here:

...........I am undecided on how many lines to add and what would look best?  I've seen models of Essex carriers where modelers have added only 1 line, or only added 2 lines, or added all 3. What is best?

Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Looking at pics of other carriers the center line is pretty consistent which makes sense as they used that one as a guide for take off.  Other ships show sometimes bigger dashed lines on the sides, solid lines or no lines.

Looking at the pic you included and looking at the plane at the end of the deck it looks like they divide the deck into two sides, maybe helping with staging?

That sort of thing was probably dictated by a Department of The Navy official directive written by committee.  You need to find it, read it, try to understand it and then apply it.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Centre line is probably the necessary  one .  The others look like runway edge lines and are optional.................or at least that's how I would do it.

They mark out the edges of the runway area on the flight deck, your supposed to stay within them drift to far and you risk hitting stuff such as the AA guns, deck crew or the island !!!.
