Hmm, if they're scouting around for challenging adversary aircraft, what if they bought some of the RAF's soon-to-be-retired Tornados? IIRC, you can get a decal sheet for Draken International at least.

Realistically the modern day scenario doesn't really work in the '30s
as each country's actual state of development and tactics were
largely unknown to outsiders. Particularly in the cases of the USSR
and Japan, both being regularly dismissed by their potential European
and American adversaries, and as both states controlled all information
relating to their militaries, getting a reliable picture would be difficult.

Very true for both Jon. It would take a huge stretch of real life to bring it about I suppose.

But I suppose captured enemy aircraft in WW2 would fall broadly into this topic, wouldn't they?  Weren't they typically flown against own-side aircraft to evolve tactics?

I've read reports of captured aircraft being test flown to determine what they could and couldn't do, but I've not seen any reports of "dissimilar" training ? Doesn't mean it didn't happen and I'd be surprised if it hadn't.

There were one to one comparative trials, with the info generated incoporated
into the training syllabus, however there was neither the time nor the facility
to have formal opposition force training.
